NRL Broadcast Rights (2027-?)

Involving Foxtel is odd - are Seven proposing to take Fox’s coverage or are they accepting a lower viewer number to increase the offer

Here is another point from the article I can find:

(Seven and Foxtel’s offer) will include the men’s, women’s and Under 19’s interstate fixtures with a pledge to heavily promote each game not just in the NSW and Queensland markets but nationally in AFL markets.

The article has paparazzi photos of Seven CEO James Warburton, Seven’s network head of sport Lewis Martin, ARLC chairman Peter V’landys and NRL CEO Andrew Abdo having lunch in a Sydney CBD restaurant.

Theyll need to heavily promote the game, because if 7 take Origin, those three wednesday nights wont exist in channel 9s eyes.

7 wanted NRL from last season before 9 retained it. We will be in a reverse situation from 2002-2006 with 7 having AFL, League and Cricket while 9 have the Tennis and Olympics

I think another important point is that the competition will likely feature 18 teams and 9 games a week by the time the next broadcast deal comes into effect. There could be a possibility that Seven could get the Sunday afternoon game, Nine could have their three games, and Fox could still maintain their 5 exclusive games a week.

The article does mention that Seven are looking at only the one game a week, so I would suspect that Nine would still have some games as well in such a scenario.

Does Nine currently offer ad-free via Stan Sport?

Some Ch9 people are of the belief that News Corp/Fox don’t promote SOO as much and write negative articles about the Ch9 coverage because they don’t have as much access and don’t broadcast the matches.

No.
Subscription rights are with Fox/Kayo.

And Nine also having the hit shows, like Seven from 2005>

Paramount+ needs to get its operating system in order. If it and 10 do gain a portion of NRL rights they will be expecting a big number of subscribers watching matches.

I’d have some sympathy for Channel 9 if their NRL broadcasts weren’t such hot garbage - their Origin broadcasts were slop.

Biggest issue here is that Paramount are a content company, not a technology one. Some of the absolutely crap they’ve put out could’ve been better invested in improving their systems to offer a better product and customer experience.

Shameful that two local operators in Stan & Binge have far superior interfaces than that of a global media company, arguably better content libraries too.

Definitely should be a priority for them to get their tech in order.

The primary inquiry we must pose in this situation is: why does Seven desire both the state of origin and broader NRL rights? By doing so, they would essentially depend on Foxtel’s produced content, leading to fans being deprived in another simulcast arrangement. This arrangement will likely include free advertising for Fox League’s coverage, alongside a promotional campaign where Seven will proclaim their affection for the league. While change can be positive, a network must wholeheartedly commit to bringing a distinct approach to the sport, something that, in my humble opinion, Seven cannot and will not offer to any sport let alone Rugby League.

Simple - ratings. Having both the AFL and NRL would basically stitch up 3 days each week during winter - Origin is in the most watched programming every year and we’ve seen that a single day win the size that Origin delivers can go a long way to winning the week with some fairly ropey programming. Not to mention it would put significant pressure on Nine to have to perform without regular sport.

Seven have clearly elected not to try and launch their own subscription streaming service, so if they are keen on getting the rights to any sport now, they need the Foxtel tie-up in lieu of their own service.

So we have more simulcast deals mooted. Completely ridiculous and dilutes the audience. Not to mention this is again in the News Corp press with the target to bag channel 9 and give a leg up to fox.

The obsession 7 have with simulcast deals is ruining sport in this country. There’s no hype and prestige associated with these sports if they’re available on competing services.

The rights don’t come up until 2027 and the landscape will change again by then. So having some shitty lunch with idiot V’landys and that moron Warburton isn’t really going to move the needle that much this far out.

A bit overdramatic.

Simulcast deals ruining sport in this country… really? For networks maybe but not viewers. We all have remotes.

Who cares where people watch. It all adds up anyway.

Yes, ratings generated by airing repackaged Foxtel coverage,

What would you call 7+ then? Stan and Paramount+ at least promote their brands and sub-brands effectively along with the content. 7+ will never be able to compete with them unless they partner with a stronger streaming brand. Foxtel and Seven may well ‘need’ each other but there is a very big difference between a need and a dependence.

7+ isn’t a subscription service in the sense that you don’t have to pay to subscribe to it so Seven can’t monetise any on-line streams.

Nine paid overs for tennis and Olympics and will have to give up FTA NRL rights to 7

The value for Fox is in having more of the whole spectrum of content from the deal on their platform. Getting it closer towards everything being available on it, exclusive or otherwise. It adds to the value on people getting their relevant packages.

It isn’t subscription full stop. Subscription = Pay.

Not true, because advertising, sponsorship and viewer profiling can still be used to generate revenue from the streaming even if free to view.
