Nine Tennis Coverage

I think it has to do with the introduction of an ATP cup coming into Perth, Brisbane and sydney on 3 January 2020.

Given group matches occur simultaneously across three timezones, it seems most of them will have to be streamed on 9Now. Nine of course will broadcast Australia’s group F matches.

The women’s Brisbane International runs from 7 to 12 January, so it will also presumably be mostly on 9Now?

On Friday (Jan 3), Gem is showing the ATP from 5.30-7.30pm, while a shortened Hot Seat, News and ACA are on Nine (in Sydney… at least).

Would Gem show the Brisbane International and some overlapping matches from the ATP Cup the following week?

I believe that the Brisbane International might have to be shown on 9Go as the ATP Cup will be aired on 9GEM from 6-7:30pm due to Nine News.

That’s a bit later than usual too I think. It usually starts around NY day

It appears the whole Tennis season has been pushed back this season.

Yes that is correct. The last time a year started on a Wednesday (which was 2014), the Brisbane International started the preceding Sunday (29 December 2013).

That year, the Australian Open started on January 13, which is/was the earliest possible starting date for the tournament since it moved to the first month of the calendar year in the late 80s.

To my knowledge, January 20 will be the latest starting date for the tournament.

I know the AO is late as it’s usually close to my birthday, Jan 14 (no need for gifts )

It has been pushed back because of the introduction of the ATP Cup which will go for 10 days.

Regardless of timing, I’m fairly sure the Australian Open will again deliver excellent ratings for Nine in what surely has to be the best broadcast deal for sport any FTA network in this country currently has.

The question that should be asked (in a more relevant thread, but anyway) is whether Seven will launch MKR while the tennis is still airing on Nine in an attempt to spoil MAFS.

The Australian Open starts on the 20 Jan 2020 and concludes on the 2nd Feb 2020.

My thoughts on the 2020 Australian Open:
Schools in Victoria commence Term 1 on the Tuesday 28 January 2020. This tennis grand slam tournament will overlap with Term 1 schooling in Victoria. With term 1 starting early in Victoria, some viewers, especially in Melbourne will stop watching the Australian Open because of the tournament being pushed back this season. Think about other people. They don’t want the tennis season to start late.

They could’ve started the ATP Cup today and have the Australian Open run as usual from 13 Jan to 26 Jan.

According to guides next Friday and Saturday, Perth will see first two hours of the ATP Cup coverage on 9GEM before switching to 9HD at 9AM.

There’s still other WTA and ATP events on the calendar in the lead up.

Australia sometimes forgets just how lucky and privileged we are to hold a Grand Slam in our own backyard and what a bloody success on many fronts it has been, especially for the state of Victoria (that government and its stooges constantly pointing that out).

Can definitely see Sydney poaching it back one day, surely a given, it’ll happen. Though the facilities or lack there of, plus TA’s HQ are an obstruction.
