The Serbian Council of Australia has called on Tony Jones to resign from Nine over the Djokovic jibe. According to the ABC News live blog:
Nina Markovic, a member of the Serbian Council of Australia (SCOFA) told ABC Radio Melbourne that the council had received immediate complaints from Serbian community in Australia following Jones’s comments, claiming they were encouraged to cheer by Channel Nine camera crew prior to Jones’s live cross.
“Some of the fans who were there at that moment, they almost felt as though they were set up,” Dr Markovic told ABC Radio Melbourne.
“SCOFA is now calling for the resignation of Mr Tony Jones, for the official and formal and public apology to be issued by Channel Nine to the Australian Serbian community.”
Her comments came prior to Jones’s on-air apology.
This is the biggest beat up ever…Novak is playing everyone on a massive break. He is using this to rev up his supporters, deflect from his form…although good, not as good as he was, which is understandable. He can be a great tennis player, and not a nice person.
For me, this is a reflection of where our society has got to, looking for an outrage, wanting to be offended. There is nothing in it. And by the way, Danielle Collins is a brat.
The Serbian Council of Australia has lodged a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, in the wake of the feud between tennis legend Novak Djokovic and Nine reporter Tony Jones.
In a statement released on Monday morning, the council called for Jones to be stood down due to his “comments and behaviour” during a January 17 evening telecast.
“His comments are offensive, racist and only serve to incite further discrimination of Australian-Serbs,” the group said in a statement.”
The group said it had written to acting Nine chief executive Matt Stanton asking for immediate suspension of Jones from all sports broadcasting duties at
They even cut through and knew TJ wasn’t really a ‘big TV name’ and more known to local Victorians. Wonder if they contacted media sources in Australia?
Jumped on the Tube for a bit of nostalgia, found the full match local broadcast from 18 years ago (man time goes fast!) The 2007 Men’s Final, scanned through a bit. It’s wild how different things are now on Nine, both pros and cons, technology advances aside, as much as I admire the current network’s fresh take.
And I can’t imagine somebody so slick and professional like Sandy Roberts or Matthew White or Johanna Griggs breaking out into chant “Novak… He’s overrated… Novak’s a has-been… Kick him out”. Or even Hamish McLachlan for that matter.
I agree. Definitely couldn’t imagine the old 7 Sport presenters speaking like this. In fact, they’re a few classes above the sports presenting team that 9 WWOS have now. James Bracey might be the only one that would crack the old 7 Sport hosting team.
Monfils v Shelton turning into a classic, not sure why this is still buried on 9Gem. Surely main channel will take this instead of Swiatek if going down to the wire, Demon on after hers later.
But maybe that’s why it is on Gem, to avoid various market channel changing, as they are going to stick with the scheduled Swiatek. If so expect lots of progress scores/crosses to MCA for the veteran French entertainer playing out of his skin vs the young American flashy rising star.
Ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic has accepted an apology from Nine’s Tony Jones after feeling “disrespected” by a live TV interaction with Serbian fans on Friday night.
“Novak acknowledges the apology has been given in public as requested, and is now moving on and focusing on his next match,” the statement, which was released by Tennis Australia, said.
To play devil’s advocate on this one, I think cmo was possibly referring to TJ’s combined gaffes over the years, as many have online in recent days.
Someone suggested to me today perhaps the tennis just isn’t quite for Tony and should give it away now, stick to Nine News and other events. As much of a disappointment I’m sure that’d be, being such a prestigious event and the network’s biggest annual major sport outside SOO/NRL GF. Their summer sport. Plus he’s already been anchoring it for 7 years.
Nick McArdle signed off 9Gem at 9:05pm edt, 65min overtime due to the women’s marathon R4 match. Channel now running that time behind schedule with Death In Paradise not pre empted. Bringing an end to the secondary Aus Open broadcast feed after 9 days.
