Nine to serve up the Adelaide International tennis tournament

adelaide-international-2023

Nine’s Wide World of Sports will turn up the heat on the summer of tennis when the world’s best square off at the two-week Adelaide International, available live and free on the 9Network and 9Now from January 1-14.

In Adelaide International 1, eight of the world’s top 10 men and women will be on court for the first week of competition at The Drive.

Twenty-one-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will feature, alongside women’s world No. 5 Aryna Sabalenka and former world No. 1 and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka.

In Adelaide International 2, more of the world’s best are on show including Australia’s top-ranked men’s player, Nick Kyrgios, who will use the tournament to rev up his 2023 Australian Open preparation.

This will be the first time Kyrgios plays an ATP 250 event in Adelaide, where he can expect tough opposition from world No. 8 Andrey Rublev and Sebastian Korda in the men’s singles.

South Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis will also line up for Adelaide International 2. Kokkinakis, who won his first ATP singles title at the Adelaide International earlier this year and then went on to win his first Grand Slam doubles title at the Australian Open, is looking forward to starting the new year at home.

The second week of the tournament will see the world’s top four-ranked women – Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula and Caroline Garcia – line up with 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

Swiatek, a three-time major winner, took the world No. 1 ranking from Ash Barty and has since dominated the women’s tour. Her 37-match winning streak after Barty’s retirement is the best since Martina Hingis in 1997.

Live coverage will be hosted by Nick McArdle and Brett Phillips, with matches available on the 9Network across 9Go! and 9Gem, or to stream anywhere, anytime on 9Now.

ADELAIDE INTERNATIONAL: JANUARY 1-14 – LIVE AND FREE ON 9GO! AND 9GEM. STREAM ANYWHERE, ANYTIME ON 9NOW

Note: the tournaments will also be shown live, ad-free on Stan Sport

Great shot and love the logo on the floor

Really like all those presentations. The passion and investment is also evident. No wonder Nine and TA etc have strong bonds. Not sure the same can be said about another code and broadcaster, although a certain masthead’s article this afternoon suggests a new agreement with them is about to be inked.

Looks awesome.

Only thing that’s irritating me now are the scoreboard graphics. Slightly too small and a bit hard to read.

I was reluctant to include the cap with the logo on the floor without starting a 2D vs 3D discussion

Another view from tonight.

At 5Pm (WA Time), Nine Perth abruptly cut off the telecast of the tennis to head straight to Nine News First at Five.

With Kaia Kanepi’s match on Centre Court at Memorial Drive still going after around 2 hours (going the distance), veteran Richard Gasquet’s delayed match on the same court may not start until closer to 4:30pm aedt and if the rallies and sets are long, might go well past 6pm or even 7pm.

9Go! Adelaide International telecast scheduled to finish 6pm, with a triple movie night following, which could be impacted.

update: 7.30pm aedt

The above indeed came exactly true. Also, didn’t realise there was another scheduled match on the same court after Giron vs Gasquet, Nine have decided to stick with that (be it contractual or not) and looks almost certain that “Shrek 3” and maybe even the next movie will be pre-empted, at least in Sydney and Melbourne tonight. @TV.Cynic

Looks like another night of last minute pre-emptions:

On 9Go! with the Adel. Int’l, Rybakina vs Collins’ is going the distance, meaning the headline (originally “not before 8pm cst scheduled start”) Aussie star Thanasi Kokkinakis probably won’t start until closer to 10pm aedt, meaning movie re-run “Police Academy” all but certain not to air in at least Sydney and Melbourne.

Meanwhile, on the main channel with the United Cup, Nadal and Aussie De Minaur’s at Sydney Olympic Park has turned into a classic (7pm start), pushing other matches back, as well as potential Brisbane venue showings on brosdcast.

But all the above could spell good news for Nine’s shares and also allows a chance for Perth viewers in their prime time with the 3 hour difference. Mentions like “Djokovic” “Demon” “Nadal” “United Cup” “Adelaide” “Popyrin” have also been trending on Google and social media platforms.

9 going to ads straight after Di Minaur’s win is a bit naff.

Why is tonight’s coverage not on the main channel?

Even better why is the Adelaide international on GO and not on gem where it can be in HD?

Adelaide International was on 9GO! in the past three days with United Cup on 9Gem. With today being the rest day for United Cup, Adelaide International is on 9Gem.

At least there’s now the option to stream it in HD on Go.

Today’s United Cup coverage finished at 4pm aedt instead of the scheduled 4.30pm. Nine are now airing a shortened version of Tipping Point until the scheduled Afternoon News starts at 4.30pm (in Sydney and Melbourne).

Bad decision. News should be full hour.

Why? The 4pm bulletins are subpar filled with fluff compared to 6pm anyways.
