Aussies light up Wimbledon tonight live on Channel 9

Coverage from 7:30pm on 9Gem switching to Channel 9HD from 9:40pm

The biggest night of the tournament for Australia’s main Wimbledon hopes Nick Kyrgios, Alex de Minaur, Ajla Tomljanović and Jason Kubler will be shown Live and Free tonight on Channel 9HD from 9.40pm.

Coverage begins from the All England Lawn Club from 7.30pm on 9Gem on a historic night when four Australians will play in the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time in 23 years (1999).

First up from 8.00pm on 9Gem before switching to Channel 9HD, rising star Alex de Minaur goes up against Chile’s Cristian Garín, before box-office entertainer Nick Kyrgios takes over centre court to go head-to-head against American young gun Brandon Nakashima.

Ajla Tomljanović, in one of biggest games of her career, will go head-to-head against France’s Alizé Cornet, and with some of the biggest names already knocked out, she is an exciting prospect.

Jason Kubler will also fly the Aussie flag in the fourth round, his first at a Grand Slam, when he faces world No. 14, American Taylor Fritz.

Todd Woodbridge, Sam Groth, Jelena Dokic and Brett Phillips will provide expert commentary hosted by Roz Kelly and Tony Jones.

Here come the complaints via twitter. Nine about to do the dirty on Alex De Minaur.

Yep, De Minaur about to win but loses the set, 9 decide to air Kyrgios. What should have happened is Nine interrupt whatever 9Gem or 9Go was airing and air the start of the Kyrgios match, and move to main channel once De Minaur’s had finished.

What’s further - de Minaur is about to drop the fourth set (it’s currently *5-4 in Cristian Garin’s favour as I type this). (EDIT he has just dropped the set, 6-4, and it’s now into a decider)

Of the four Majors Nine are covering this year, it’s only the Australian Open where they provide complimentary coverage on 9Gem as an alternate to what the main channel airs, which is mostly matches involving Australians and early matches involving top seeds.

I remember when Seven and Foxtel had the joint Wimbledon rights a decade ago, Todd Woodbridge (who was anchoring the former’s coverage) explained that they were unable to air a match involving Serena Williams due to “contractual obligations”.

Right now there is the situation where we have two Aussies playing at once, and ideally Nine would’ve loved to go straight to the Kyrgios match had the de Minaur-Garin match finished in straight sets.

Watching ADM on Stan sport

I know that the bosses from Nine want viewers to go onto Stan, which is fair enough from their business end. But there should be the odd occurrence like tonight where 9Gem could have been used alongside Nine. Once the Kyrgios match began, they could have easily moved the de Minaur match to 9Gem.

Good news for WA fans, you can watch the Wimbledon on the main channel on Ch90. I was using 9Now app and noticed that they had Wimbledon on Nine and GEM (which was supposed to be updated as Footy Classified on 9GEM)

Well he lost so…

He wasn’t losing at the time they switched.

I fear we’ll be seeing more of this BS in an effort to drive viewers to pay for streaming services. Wait until Paramount+ gets hold of the AFL and drops a game screening on Ten half way through a cliffhanger fourth quarter to show a repeat of Bull. “If you’d like to enjoy the end of this match, switch to Paramount+ now”.

That will never happen.

Why does it matter whether he won or lost? He was up 2 sets to 1 and had just lost the third in a tiebreak when they cut away from the match. Him losing at that stage was not the expected outcome.

I think Nine’s contractual rights only allow them to air Wimbledon coverage on one broadcast channel.

That’s why you pay for Stan

Yeah but they know how ratings work. People will tune in to watch Nick and not Alex.

He is the MAFS of tennis, not necessarily in a good way.
