Nine Tennis Coverage

No one cares, Kyrgios/KOKKINAKIS are changing perspectives about doubles tennis and encouraging more people to watch. So deal with it

  1. lose the combative tone.

  2. they really aren’t doing anything to lift numbers permanently.
They’ll play this event, they’ll cause some controversy and then everyone will blissfully go back to not caring about doubles again. There’s no permanence to this.
Kyrgios will quickly lose interest like he always does during his career.
Could be a worldbeater instead turns up once a year at the Aussie Open and stirs shit as if it’s his personal Schoolies.

They took matches off Gem throughout the day, because it doesn’t rate. I know I used to feel frustrated about that, but now I understand.

It would have been nice if all 3 Aussie matches scheduled tomorrow were on today for Australia day.

So you’d rather they don’t have a day of rest?

Alcott’s final is scheduled for that slot:

It’s not that but rather when you get to the quarterfinal stage of a grand slam, there’s no need to have two channels of coverage because all the matches are played on the main court.

Doubles matches don’t rate well enough to justify 9Gem’s coverage shifting to focusing on them.

well done to aussies ebden and purcell who win through to the sf of mens doubles in a third set tiebreak on australia day…rightly not shown by 9, as there was a ladies singles qf some may regard as a snooze fest between 2 players who arent big names to show

im not a doubles guy, but nice to see aussie players who dont get anywhere near the recognition they deserve and are not regarded as stars or ratings gold, going deep into events and winning on australia day

this afternoon australias most accomplished and experienced active mens doubles player peers is playing in the mixed sf, and storm sanders is playing in a womens doubles qf…rightly wont be seen on 9 because there is a mens singles qf on at the same time to cover

After the Australian Open concludes this Sunday, Nine’s next tennis telecast should be the Davis Cup World Group Qualifier between Australia and Hungary, to be held at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena on the weekend of March 4-5.

Nine’s guides look a bit dodgy this afternoon, one online says coverage as normal and then moving to 9Gem at 6. But the Foxtel one (usually more accurate) says coverage finishing at 5pm with Hot Seat and nothing on 9Gem?

I reckon Nine were hoping Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios would be after Dylan Alcott, to lead-in to Nine News again. But the opposite has happened.

Surely Alcott’s will be broadcast and its a mistake? Shocking if not.

That’s what the broadcast EPG has currently - coverage finishing at 5pm AEDT. Hot Seat on Sydney/Melbourne. Brisbane had Tipping Point at 4pm. Nothing on 9Gem.

However, this slide was shown

I would assume that if Alcott’s match is still going after 5pm, Hot Seat will be bumped out of the schedule.

Based on the ratings of The Footy Show when both were respective hosts, McGuire is far more popular than Alcott.

If Alcott’s match is not shown on TV, it will send the wrong message to viewers given it is his last match before retirement. And he was named Australian of the Year two days ago.

This is what I am thinking too. The match is scheduled to start no earlier than 3:30pm local time, but matches can easily run overtime. Given it’s Alcott’s final match and it is a Grand Slam final, Nine should show it in full.

True. Nine will probably broadcast the game for the sake of virtue signalling, not because wheelchair tennis is entertaining to watch.

Agree that Nine should show the Dylan Alcott match in full. It is his last match. Wheelchair Tennis hasnt been given much notice over the years, but this is the best time to show it on Nine. Alcott is the 2022 Australian of the Year after all.

Nine will broadcast it because it is a Grand Slam final involving an Australian who is one of the best to ever do it in his discipline.

The Alcott-Schroder final started right on 5pm, and Nine is sticking with it on the main channel.

Looks like AO organisers are facing a scheduling dilemma in regards to Saturday’s men’s doubles final. Usually it is held after the presentations of women’s singles final. But now with two Aussie pairs competing, should it be held in late afternoon as the build-up to the women’s final (provided Ash Barty makes it)?
