Nine Technical Issues -- March & April 2021

In a pre-COVID world, this would have been easy - at the moment it’s potentially a different story

This is the exact attitude that management tend to take towards DR and its costing companies a lot - its too expensive, its distruptive, the risk is super low, the list can go on. Ignore your ability to respond when a disaster hits at your peril (its no longer a matter if if, rather when)

A lot of IT people think their networks and systems are special - the reality is that they are just different.

That’s part of the problem these days, particularly those younger, who seemingly know no better, is people want the latest thing, rather than waiting for then enjoying reliability and consistency. Running a business, they are critical to continued efficiency and success.

The joker’s that did the Nine malware attack are probably reading this thread and ROFL. I will be ignoring any posts from Igor, Ivan, Boris or Katerina here and definitely not clicking on any of their links!

And I know my backups work too.

Has Stan been affected at all? I’m guessing it’s operated and managed outside of the Nine systems but I guess in theory just as an attack like this can lock Nine staff out of their systems a similar attack on a streamer could end up locking users out of their account - or indeed killing the content at the source.

I believe 9Now had some issues briefly but has since been resolved. Stan seemed unaffected.

I imagine some internal systems may be integrated with Nine (ie email etc) but Stan itself is hosted by AWS so not linked to Nine’s internal/broadcast systems at all.

As of yesterday afternoon they were still not running ads but had a static image on screen advising programming would return “soon”

A significant contributing factor to this is that we’re dealing with a network that has evolved over 50+ years. While clearly none of the original systems are still in place, different systems get replaced at different times, which means new systems have to interface with older systems, which then often dictates how systems which replace those older systems deal with previously new systems. The evolution of the overall systems is not the same as it would be if you were to setup an brand new TV network with no existing infrastructure.
It’s similar to the NBN (internet) situation we have, where FTTP is the obvious choice but for many reasons we have ended up with a mix of older and newer technologies with some bespoke parts to link them all together.

Certainly more difficult now, but broadcasting is listed in the most critical of services so exemptions would be available in some form for those needing to come in from overseas.

Not necessarily. AWS can be fully integrated into existing networks to provide a seamless path between a companies AWS services and office/physical data centre.

Getting here shouldn’t pose too many issues given it would fall under the skilled exemption, but as far as im aware there are few exemptions from mandatory quarantine

9’s IT dept will probably watching The Good Doctor on 7 tonight for clues:

Synopsis
