Nine showing Queensland media conference this morning - no graphics.

Well that’s the risk people run with on trying solely on online. No different to risks around transmitter problems causing issues with broadcast.
Nothing is fool-proof, they’ll just have to suck it up until problems are resolved.
Good to have a proper closer for once. Hate people being impatient.
Best post in the thread.
Shouldn’t this threat be called Cyber attack now since we know what it is?
Totally - but Brekkie’s point seemed rather a dated view given the way consumption has moved on.
If it’s just good ol’ ransomware, does it even count as an ‘attack’?
Of course it would. This is the media. It will always be over dramatised. I’m waiting for the dramatised versions on ACA to come out and then the mini series.
… at the risk of repeating myself, it’s most likely down to some little hacker who read the orgy of self-congratulation by 9 and Cisco in the ITWire article on Friday and by Sunday morning had crashed the whole shebang … and right now he ('cos it’s always a “he”) is laughing himself silly at the rumours of Russian, Chinese or North Korean governments being responsible for his work

To be honest, I have had the thoughts that Nine are using the “news” of this to their own advantage, and making it seem as big and dramatic as possible. Bit of a lightning rod to attract any negative press, by jumping on the front foot and admitting that there’s drama behind the scenes.
Compared to 10 a few years back.
Well, exactly, they copped a lot of flack for their of service at the time (like the Melbourne cup and news), and they said nothing publicly about it.
It’s a very different approach.

The old Nine News theme was played at the end of Nine’s Morning News (from Melbourne).
Windows crypto can happen to anyone with Windows servers, even keeping them patched may not protect you. A good email attachment filter is another line of defence if its setup properly. For NEC to have been off so long their backups must not have worked - its usually just reformat the HDD/SSD’s, reinstall Windows then restore from your backup. IT industry pushes online backups from cloud but nothing beats tape or portable HDD’s: once disconnected from the network the baddies can no longer get to them. Even O365 cloud can get compromised by bad user behaviour. Nowhere is safe.
I can actually listen to it, the existing remix they’ve had for the past decade is terrible - hate the repetitiveness every 3 seconds.
Danny Weidler speaks about issues at the start of his interview.

But wouldn’t the problem be determining which backup to use? You’d have to work out the infiltration point and when it happened to stop it from happening again. These programs can lie dormant for ages before kicking into action, and you could just be restoring it from a backup.
It’s not just Windows. Crypto-malware (or ransomware) exists for Linux and MacOS too, it’s just that Windows & Windows Server is what almost every business uses for critical infrastructure and application hosting.
Restores take time, and you can’t trust anything on your network so everything’s got to stay powered off until it’s cleaned or it could re-infect the systems you’re rebuilding/restoring.
Whether backups can be used - and how old a backup you have to restore - depends on how long the attackers have been in your network:
Nowadays they quietly spread across all systems and wait weeks before encrypting everything on a weekend, so your backups, even tapes of backups during those weeks, can still be infected and restoring them brings back the malware.
I don’t envy Nine’s (or anyone else’s) techs having to clean up a mess like this.
They had an Interesting interview on Sky news about this just before did anyone see it?
