Do we think Nine will go after for the next round of AFL broadcast rights when the current Seven/Fox deal expires?
Interesting studio setup. Assume that’s from the MLB studios?
They will 100% try to get Cricket & AFL. Like any premium sport
Does Nine have the resources to serve three masters (AFL, NRL and Rugby Australia) at the same time?
I doubt conversations will even open for either of those sports for three years though, so really it’s a pointless discussion.
Nine is showing the promo for its 2027 line up right after the NRL Grand Final post match presentation.
At least they’re actually living up to their WWOS branding.
Really? Australian summer? That would suggest no longer having broadcast rights to the Australian Open then. As one network couldn’t possibly afford both CA and TA rights, on top of having at least one major winter code and everything else.
They probably can’t but they will still bid to try get cricket & AFL.
They have Stan so can use that. They can have Test cricket on 9 - which ends before Aus open starts & others can be a mix of 9 & Stan etc
Didn’t they bid in 2022 which was Test Cricket & BBL only?
As said by @OnAir its very very far into the future so it’s kinda pointless
That’s all very well hypothetically, but there’s still the matter of this:
AFL + NRL + TA + CA = $10 billion+ before you even add everything else ![]()
Interesting that Nine included NHL in the 2027 promo. Yes it has the weekly live game, but it means nothing if it can’t show the Stanley Cup finals.
As for cricket, I think Nine will try to get the rights to the next International Cricket Council broadcast deal when the current one with Prime Video expires at the end of next year. The next deal includes the men’s T20 World Cup in 2028 which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Nine were definitely pushing their 2027 sports rights during the NRL Grand Final last night. And rightly so. Best opportunity to do it.
Could have had the random plug for current sports too. Like the NBL on Nine/9GO and for the EPL on Stan too.
This time next year we’ll be looking at either MAFS OR The Block as the only tentpole reality show instead of both ![]()
How much of some of those events highlighted in the promo will actually be on 9?
Interesting they’ve decided not to promote Stan, especially given that’s where you’ll need to go to watch a lot of it
I suppose given that the contracts are held by Nine Entertainment and most of those rights are effectively split amongst brands within the stable maybe Nine consider it a more effective strategy to use Wide World of Sports as a promotional brand umbrella for everything on every brand within their ecosystem because every deal is effectively done with Nine through its broadcast sport division
