Looks like they’ve given up now, no HD bug at all :’(
Nine themselves haven’t been running a “HD” watermark addition during the Australian Open.
And to be quite honest, I don’t need those two letters in the corner of the screen to tell me I’m watching the HD channel - similar to location names that’s a job best left to the EPG.
Yes I agree, HD television isn’t really a novelty anymore and not necessary having the HD bug there
So SCA add the HD watermark themselves?
Yep
nope, the pres suite does. Often get the same issues on Nine Northern NSW
Which pres suite? Whereabouts in the chain is it added?
No SCA add it themselves
Doubt it because almost every time something happens with theirs it also happens to northern NSW.
I know for a fact that it’s scheduled by SCA traffic/pres in Watson ACT (for now anyway), not sure who you’ve spoken to
I don’t believe in coincidences so how would the same thing happen almost all the time in NNSW when it’s controlled elsewhere?
You tell me, I’m not sure what you’re on about
The HD add-on has to be added after everything else (after programme content, promos, commercials, etc.), and just for the HD version of a channel, while being left off the SD version.
If I recall correctly it’s done using one new piece of Cisco gear SCA installed in Watson when the affiliation changed (and why the commercials & SCA-inserted promos in breaks were still SD & look awful on 9HD).
The timings/triggers for when it should appear & disappear would be provided from TCN9’s playout centre (this bit I’m assuming, hopefully someone else can add to this/clarify).
This might satisfy @portmacman’s claim. Even though NBN and SCA 9 are played out from completely different locations on different equipment, if TCN 9 triggers (originating out of NPC I assume) are controlling the HD add-on then it might explain it.
I don’t want to say too much but watermark timings/triggers etc are all done based of an educated guess from advanced draft schedules and put into the schedule manually by the traffic department at SCA
That’s pretty much what I wanted to say but I have no technical knowledge!!! Pulsing is what radio calls it. Thank you!
And yeah I think all SCA server content (promos/commericals etc.) is still in SD on the HD channel but I don’t know that for certain. It certainly looks like it is
So in the case of late changes, the system would have to be manually updated by SCA independently of the parent network?
That said, for the most part SCA seem to work off a dirty Nine feed so common watermarks and PRGs aren’t really an issue.
Yeah from what I know it’s updated on the fly by SCA pres when there’s changes, that’s one reason why it might not look right sometimes. Someone else would know more about what happens in that instance. But essentially HD bugs are added in by SCA
If they weren’t Nine would have to supply SCA with two feeds, one SD and one HD, but they only supply a HD feed. Correct?
