(Greg Byrnes) told Mediaweek O’Neil is an excellent addition to their line-up as “he understands the craft of making great radio”. Byrne’s is also realistic that it may take time for an FM personality to gel with their AM audience, but he’s not worried.
“He just has to get to know our audience, and our audience has to get to know him,” he said.
“That’s not going to happen straight away. That will take time to develop, but in those early hours of the morning, it’s a wonderful opportunity for both sides, because there’s time to talk and there’s time to chat.”

I’m far from an expert on radio matters, but is going from a Sydney morning show to an Overnights show not something of a demotion?
Not necessarily if he wants to go into the talkback field.
And I’d say he’ll be getting a nice pay cheque at 2GB.

If you’re worried about an unstable company and constantly changing market, a steady job on AM talkback as you slide into your golden years is a nice gig, especially if he’s been wanting to do it.

Wow, certainly very unexpected with Phil. I remember years ago he did a short stint on 2UE. I really like him and hope he does well.
