Nine Radio (Talk)

Mike Jeffreys was a guest on Michael McLaren’s show this evening where it was mentioned that Mike would be on 2GB from January 8.

No more details were provided, but one would have to assume Mike is taking over overnights seeing as Luke Grant is moving to weekend mornings and it’s the one timeslot without a confirmed host.

It has been many-a-year since Mike hosted a show on 2GB (prior to Alan and Ray defecting from 2UE, I believe), having been on 2CC and 2UE since then, and more recently on a community station in Sydney’s north.

It will be marvellous to hear Mike on a regular basis again.

Edit: I’ve had it confirmed by a mutual friend. Mike taking over 2GB weekday overnights.

That’s great news! Mike is excellent.

Wow, great news if true. Mike Jeffreys is a radio pro from way back and has worked across multiple markets and many stations. I remember him well on 2UW around the mid-1970s with stints on 2UE earlier and again later 1980s. I believe Mike started in Newcastle radio mid-late 1960s. He has a very dry wit and should be highly entertaining and lively for 2GB (and presumably 4BC/2CC) overnights … a complete contrast to the dozy lifeless 3AW sessions we’re being subjected to during overnights atm.

Agreed. And now that you’ve got space opening at 2GB, I’d like to see some more ex-2UE announcers make a comeback on Sydney talkback radio.

This is great news. Mike has been much missed in recent years and will be a very welcome addition to the line up. Serious when he wants to be but also has a dry wit that enables him to deal well with all types of callers

Mike Jeffreys also worked at 3XY in the early 1980s doing the morning shift 9-12 and was very entertaining.

Not wishing to age shame, but if he was on the radio in the mid 1970s, how old is he?

My trusty edition of “Don’t Touch That Dial” by Wayne Mac shows Mike Jeffreys on the rosters during Mid-late 1960s of both 2HD (“More Music with the Good Guys”) and 2KO (“The Brighter 2KO Channel 1410”). So guessing age around mid-70-ish? But who cares … Mike has a timeless radio voice, is opinionated and can stir the pot. Would be an inspired choice for 2GB overnights.

No, I don’t “care”, I was just curious. Like I said I wasn’t aiming to age shame or anything.

Well and truly into his 70’s. Having said that he is just so happy to be given the opportunity.

Shane McInnes hosting afternoons… “let’s look forward to the year in sport” shocking. It’s almost with him guaranteed you get sport references from him every day if not a segment.
I have switched off.

Well only 10 days or so to go before some form of normality and common sense starts to return.

I find he tries too hard to be a shock jock, too.

Been listening to Heidi on drive over Summer.

All I can say, is Felgate is such a mistake. Just leave HM in the slot and be done with it.

Heidi isn’t perfect, don’t get me wrong, has some work to do, but she does connect well with the audience, and I think in the longer run would be a good presenter.

HM is ‘one of the people’, gets the train into work, no flashy Instagram stuff, not a wannabe fame chaser. The issue is Felgate is the opposite.

She won’t connect with the audiences and watch the share slideeeeeeeeee.

But to where? There isn’t a compelling talk alternative, and I’m not buying that 3AW’s audience will switch over to music - they would’ve done so by now.

They will just switch off. I used to listen to DeeDee but switched off when Jackie Felgate replaced her. I may tune it to Tony Moclaire as I find him interesting. I have no intention of listening from 3:00 onwards despite being an avid Tom Elliott listener. I predominantly work from home so from 3:00 I will replace 3AW with Spotify.

Interesting ABC Melbourne 774 effectively has new hosts in mornings and drive too for next year.

Ali Moore is excellent in drive, as is Raf Epstein in mornings. If you’re looking for talk and aren’t fans of Tom or Jacqui there is one other option.

Raf is miles ahead of Tom, I can see that slot become competitive

MTR on 1377khz? Sorry I know that not a thing anymore and has not since 2012.

Agree, Heidi has been great. Either her or Nick McCallum would’ve been much better permanent options.

Jacqui was average at best filling in on Afternoons. Talks down to the audience as if she’s still a newsreader and she struggled to engage in conversation. She may also be absent frequently to MC events, attend promotional events, other influencer stuff etc.

I think a lot of the male demographic will go to JB and Billy on Triple M. Heck, even SEN might improve its share. A lot of listeners may also just switch to podcasts and give up on radio with no adequate talk alternative.

Can’t see that happening with Tom’s loyal following. Not to mention the massive lead-in from Breakfast.
