Congrats to Chris. He is excellent on radio. Playing the long game there. He may well become Ray Hadley’s successor if all goes well.

According to Media Diary in The Australian, Nine will officially announce tomorrow that Chris O’Keefe is Jim Wilson’s replacement. In the meantime, Joe Hildebrand will host the program for the remainder of the ratings year.

The sad thing about this appointment is that Nine hasn’t learned that shoe-horning television people into radio slots is causing listeners to drift away. I suggested this would happen when they appointed Knight and Wilson.

There are seasoned radio performers at 2GB who have a strong following built up over many years that listeners are familiar with yet they continue to use untested talent. O’Keefe has done a good job as fill in but he is hardly a seasoned radio broadcaster. He could’ve benefitted from several more years filling in before being handed this role. Talent isn’t necessarily interchangeable between radio and television. Good radio talent doesn’t necessarily make good television talent, as we’ve seen demonstrated many times over the years.

Another bone headed move from Nine who fail to recognise radio and television consumers are looking for very different things from those mediums.

Chris was always the choice for 2GB drive. Proven talk radio performer.

Chris was never ACA replacement, that was a media beat-up by other media outlets with little knowledge.

As for Chris Smith, he is happy with weekends, fill ins and his TV work.

A bit of a slap in the face to Jim Wilson to announce his replacement so soon.

It all depends on what is Jim’s new role.

What’s to say he didn’t want to get back to TV some day soon.

Spencer Howson mentioned at the end of Sunday’s show that Clinton Maynard will be heard in his place as 4BC are shifting studios from one end of the building to another.

Good that Nine are investing in their studios.

I suppose such a move is made easier without 4BH on air from the same building as it once was.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Michael McLaren walks soon. He has been passed over multiple times now for a dayside timeslot.

There’s not a lot of other talkback networks with jobs going.

Is that that rite of passage though? ABC Overnights (both weeknight and weekend) presenters have been doing it for over a decade.

Wow, I thought the new lineup was to start in 2023.

He is just about due back and will host overnight weekends presumably whilst Luke Grant is having a break and Clinton Maynard doing overnight weekdays for a week or two.

On a similar note, it looks like the local Weekend Breakfast program will also not be heard. Instead it will be the 2GB Garden Clinic show in its place. One guesses though that those replacement weekend shows will have to be pipped in live though, to not cause issues with the stop-gaps caused by daylight saving.

According to the Nine Radio Syndication site, Michael is going to host the Chris Smith Weekend program from 10/12/22 to 08/01/23.

On a similar note, quite a few movements coming up over the summer period apparently. Looks like there is still a few holes to fill though. Here’s a summary so far:

  • Afternoons Deborah Knight

    • replacement Joe Hildebrand 12/12/22 to 13/01/23
  • Afternoons with Sofie Formica

    • replacement Rob McKnight 12/12/22 to 16/12/22 (Presumably the show will then take a few week hiatus and link with Sydney until Sofie returns from break)
  • Australia Overnight with Michael McLaren

    • replacement Bill Woods 29/08/22 to 09/12/22
  • Australia Overnight with Tony Moclair

    • replacement Simon Owens 19/12/22 to 22/12/22

That’s a reasonably new building. Why are they making changes?

And do they still have the old 4BH logo outside?

Michael regularly appears on Sky News and would be great in a permanent role or even his own Sky News show. Certainly more qualified than Erin Molan.

The Nine Radio Syndication site has now been further updated as follows:

** Afternoons with Sofie Formica

    • replacement Rob McKnight 12/12/22 to 16/12/22
    • replacement Greg Cary 19/12/22 to 06/01/23

Great to see Greg returning to the 4BC airwaves as a presenter, something I certainly wasn’t expecting but very welcome. He has popped up on 4BC a few times as a guest recently being interviewed about his book.

It also shows that unlike last Christmas, 4BC will be keeping at least some local programs this year, further details to follow.

And something else very interesting I’ve just noticed on the Syndication site:

  • Ray Hadley Morning Show
    • replacement Mark Levy 12/12/22 to 13/01/23 (ACT, NSW)
    • replacement Bill McDonald 12/12/22 to 23/12/22 (QLD)
    • replacement Peter Fegan 26/12/22 to 06/01/23 (QLD)
    • replacement Bill McDonald 09/01/23 to 13/01/23 (QLD)

4BC not taking the Mark Levy replacement show during Hadley’s absence but staying local.
