Nine Radio (Talk)

Possibly but seems like there’s more to it to be honest.

3AW reports Dean died at his home in Noosa on Sunshine Coast. After retiring from radio, he and his wife relocated to Queensland.

According to Jon Anderson in the Sunday Herald Sun, former AFL player Jimmy Bartel will co-host 3AW Breakfast over summer whilst Ross and Russ take a break.

There’s no mention of who will host alongside Jimmy, but chances are it could be one of the program’s regular fill-ins (Stephen Quartermain, Emily Power, Tony Leonard or Darren James).

Yesterday was Neil Mitchell’s 70th birthday (was there any mention of it on-air today?). 3AW (and the loyal audience) will be hoping that Neil still has many years ahead of him at the station.

Today was Tom Elliott’s birthday (54). He was surprised live on-air when newsreader Tony Tardio, his wife Elise, and daughter Ava came into the studio to sing happy birthday and bring in a Carlton shaped cake. The DJ at Tom’s 21st birthday in 1988 rang in to say hello.

Hi, I am been listening to old 3aw audio clips that I have found and made me wonder When did Talking Melbourne Promo’s and it’s slogan start on 3aw? I notice a audio clip from 1990 with Talking Melbourne how much earlier that 1990 was the talking melbourne slogan started?

I remember when living in Brisbane about 15 years ago, 4BC also had the Talking Brisbane promo going? When did that start and is the promo still going? Did the “Talking…” promo ever made it into Sydney and Perth?

Thanks

Around 1990 perhaps late 1989. Start of 1989 they started 3AWARE -the thinking person’s radio station which flopped following the catchy “personality radio”.

Would love to hear all of these!

Funnily enough, Denis Walter’s program just aired an old clip from 2001 with Keith McGowan (former Overnights presenter) which featured an old ‘Talking Melbourne’ sound, and aired the old Talking Melbourne tune going into the 11pm news.

I think this was one of the first. Don’t recall why Hinch is there, don’t recall him mixing radio and television.

David Armstrong still not on air for morning shift of news. Seems it’s been 3 weeks now
I do remember that he did have COVID last year and isolated. So I do wonder if he has refused to be vaxed because of “having antibodies” from previously having it?
Again not saying he does, but it is very odd he’s disappeared and the only logical reason I can imagine. In most cases they reference he is on holidays etc

6PR used Talking Perth for quite a while but I’m not sure for how long.

This theme was from around 2007 when I was listening to 4BC online. Back in the days where the stream quality wasn’t the best…

And here are a few short demos from 2UE, 3AW and 6PR (not sure where I got this from):

David Armstrong did not have Covid… He was in a Tier 1 Location with his family and they had to isolate for 14 days

I’ve wondered if maybe they’ve had to make cuts in the news department?

Also worth noting that David ‘liked’ a tweet on twitter a few months ago which was pro-vaccination.

Thats good to hear. Hopefully taking a well deserved break then and he will be back soon! Seems to be a split roster at the moment across the morning shift.

Derryn was on 3AW for long periods of time. Check his Wikipedia entry below.

He was but my recollection was that he quit 3AW when he started his TV gig at Seven (1988-91) then went to Ten (1992-93) and Midday (1994). I didn’t think he had any radio commitments during that time but maybe AW kept him on in some commentary position?

That Wikipedia article is also wrong, Hinch never worked at 3MP – they’ve misquoted the source that they’ve cited.

I’d rather trust my own memory and resesrch rather than a Wikipedia page most of the time. Derryn left AW mornings in 1987 and didn’t return until 2000 to host Nightline for year before returning again in 2003. The 90s were TV, a stint at 5DN and maybe a year doing editorials and analysis on Gold 104.3 breakfast.

could make some sense even as a throwback to the “Personality” days after the flop on 3AWARE.

Derryn actually did a stint at 3AW during 1990 hosting a program called “The Other Side”. Here is a clip from the 3AW archive run by Simon Owens of one of the programs with Craig Willis as the guest.

Not sure how long this stint was for, I suspect not all that long.
