Nine Radio (Talk)

When David Armstrong throws to a break after sport, he says “(current time), this is Nine News”. It will take a while to get used to.
Meanwhile, Craig Willis is hosting on 3AW this morning from 6am to midday AEDT.

Sign off that JohnsonTV mentions is after sport throwing to the break, then back with weather and the usual sign off back to programming. (Minus the Nine News)

You can listen to the new full 3aw Newsbreak (including ads ha) below:

A simpler way would be:

“24 degrees in Essendon at 9am, good morning David Armstrong with the latest 9 News.”

It’s cleaner.

In Sydney it’s “9 News at 10, good morning I’m Amie Meehan.”

Sounding great after her cancer battle back in May

Meanwhile over at Mac Sports Radio they still have a lead up to news saying “Macquarie national news is next”. And their sport jingle in news also says Macquarie. How long until this format is axed?

Personally, calling it “9 news” on radio just sounds strange to me. It’s 9 news when it is on channel 9, but on 2GB it just sounds wrong.

Maybe they need to be crossing to the 9 newsroom?

Something just doesn’t sit right with me listening to it

It is just a matter of time before Nine’s logo appears on top of websites of 3AW, 2GB etc as they are brought under the nine.com.au umbrella.

same on 2GB. Also the dreadful Power Station jingle.

They needed to get things perfectly clean from today if they were 100% on board with this change. At the moment its an absolute mess.

I think they should have looked to the past and used the newspaper mastheads and IIRC 3AW was originally “the Age station” given David Syme & Co (The Age) was one of the founders.

Check out the 0.54 mark, where there is a newstheme for “3XY Age radio news”…

I think it would reinforce the local nature of 3AW/2GB if they used 3AW Age radio news / 2GB SMH news as the news brand. As for using the Cool Hand Luke (Nine News) theme - it’s hardly a new concept - for a period 3DB used to use the Seven (HSV7) National News theme.

Of course, they could also reuse the old 3XY Age theme if they ditched an expensive sports format for a 70s classic hits/rock format…

The 3AW news theme (at 1.12 mark) was the first I heard when I moved to Australia in 1988. Variation of that theme was used by 3AW over the next three decades, until last night.
Also, 3AW news went through several title changes in the same period:
3AW national network news -> 3AW Southern Cross Network news -> 3AW Fairfax Radio News -> Macquarie National News

That first one with the singers singing ‘news bulletin’ sounds like a joke news theme for a comedy sketch.

I’ve always hated Macquarie National News. Glad it’s gone. Hopefully all references to Macquarie network end up going under the new ownership of Nine. They’re doing a good job of becoming a truly multi platform media company.

Nothing beasts 2UE… 954… NEWS.

The Macquarie Network has long been a shade of its glory days. Warwick Jnr, the then owners who I forget who the were, Moyes, Singleton and Macquarie Media decimated it over the years.

With good friend and colleague Diane “Dee Dee” Dunleavy taking a break before taking helm of 3AW afternoons later this month, Peter “Grubby” Stubbs will be hosting The Weekend Break solo from this weekend onwards.

3AW needs to drop that awful rising sting into the weather at the end of the news. Sounds like we’re stuck in 1965. Something more contemporary would be a good idea.

I think this is the old 3AW theme in full - also used by 2UE around the Mid-Late 2000s (indeed, one of the 2UE 90th birthday audio compliations is where I grabbed it from) and possibly other stations in the Southern Cross > Fairfax > Macquarie Radio Networks prior to last night. From a Sydney perspective, it ironically sounded better on Show Radio than it did on 2UE! :stuck_out_tongue:

Meanwhile, here is 2GB’s now previous news theme - managed to splice together a clean/full version of this thanks to a major technical difficulty with the 5pm news (which resulted in the bulletin not going to air) maybe about 18 months or so back.

Of course if anyone out there has clean/full copies of the other 2GB beds (Traffic, Weather, Afternoon Finance Report, etc.) with the same eight note signature as that old news theme, I’d love to hear them one day!

Wonderful find there! That sure is the theme in full.

I agree about Nine wanting to rebrand 2GB but do they really want to be so closely associated with Alan Jones?

2UE used that 3AW theme from February 2006 to February 2011 when they rebranded with a news intro that sounded like something you would have heard on Nova. They then used a remixed version of the Radio Active theme from about mid 2012 to 2UE was “retired” in September 2016. Just out of interest, does anyone have a copy of 2UE’s 2011 news intro?

Thanks for that info!

In that compilation of old 2UE news themes, there was also this intro with a Ken Sparkes VO and theme music which is obviously very similar, but not quite the same as the 2006-11 theme. Did that variant ever make it to air?

If I’m not mistaken, 2CC still uses 2UE’s 2012 remix of the “Radio Active” news theme.

Of course it’s another theme I wouldn’t mind hearing a clean/full version of in the future!

I used to have some audio of 2UE News intros during their “FM lite” branding era, but unfortunately lost it during a major hard drive crash years ago.

What I definitely do know is that the late Peter Sumner did the voiceovers (including the news intro) during that era of 2UE, later moving on to become “the voice of Jonesy & Amanda” until he sadly passed away in November 2016.
