Nine Radio (Talk)

smooth is already on DAB in brisbane

There are also members of 3AW’s AFL commentary team who are contracted to Seven: Leigh Matthews, Cameron Ling, Matthew Richardson and Jimmy Bartel. Their fate could depend on whether Nine decide to bid for the AFL TV and radio rights for 2023-2028. The current radio broadcast deal expires at the end of 2022, same time as the TV deal.

Yes but having it on 882 as well would actually make people realise it exists. The current operators do ZERO promotion of Smooth Brisbane. Zero.

AM/DAB combos are very common in the UK on stations like Greatest Hits and even Smooth UK.

Is this a loss for 3AW?

Yes, as he calls Friday night AFL for 3AW and co-hosts Sportsday on weeknights even though the show is produced by Crocmedia.

Dwayne obviously too much beer for Mr Beers then. (Likely well above the Melb GM on budget control, seem

A pity that MML is letting talent walk ahead of Nine’s acquisition attempt.

Dwayne’s lasted a long time at AW, he knows how to keep doors open should the house of Craig end up on the bread line.

I think Nine would only go down this route if they assume that they’d be blocked from merging with SCA. The biggest market is to keep the AM talk network, and the Hit network from a combined Nine/SCA.

Nova have more difficulty in terms of the fit - I’d want to keep 3AW/2GB and Smooth - so what would you do with the rest of the Nova network?

Maybe more realistically, I’d sublicense 4BH/2UE to Crocmedia - Nine already work extensively with them on TV. For 3EE, maybe similar with Capital or EON, but just cut their losses with MSR.

@Brianc68 Indeed, you’ve made good points as usual. Lachie is reaching the 15 year span that you may notice a few ownership periods averaging to of late.

Brisbane is missing a music station in the national format list and with KQ"s success, surely some brains within Nine can see the potential?

Smooth on 882 is exactly the same idea as Craig and his SEN expansion all over however DAB+ is far superior to streaming, actually a broadcast medium.

There’s plenty of further possibilities, all requiring divestment.

Nine with their MML acquisition could do the right thing by themselves and acquire SCA who, for TV at least have strategically merged with Nine already with Nine supplying regional bulletins (great idea) and soon, the NPC deal.

SCA cleared the TV deck, divesting NRN, leaving radio to discuss.

If Nine don’t invest sufficiently to reboot the MSR stations and revive PR and BC, then divest them with the SCA acquisition. However, hold GB and AW; as a business.

Convert the talk stations onto the MMM licence in Syd and Melb. We’d then have FM talk and a secure future. for talk Would be nice if this were done before the current AW talent pre midday retires. Quite the talent housed potentially at Clarendon Street South Melbourne - John, Ross, Neil + FOX bfast and whomever’s retained for 3MMM DAB+. Rejig the floor plan with the corporate functions of SCA assumed by Nine.

2/3MMM to continue as DAB+, retain the male audience. Significant DAB+ marketing investment to shift the audience. Expect less audience, see out existing talent contracts and perhaps choose a cheaper roster.

MMM to remain on FM in Adelaide (if AA still with Lachie) and Brisbane, Mix too in Perth. MMM chosen as FOX is the cash cow and should remain.

Three stations to a market you think? Remember, MMM to DAB+ only, AW and GB onto the MMM FM licence. They are their lowest share markets. Kyle rewards loyalty, he also balances that with the pay offer, should Nine want him and purge the radio side of those who let him go, perhaps that solves 2DAY’s woes too.

Divestment is legislated as 6mths but we saw the 2CH debacle. Nine could make a decision throughout, say 12 mths to divest PR and BC as music format placeholders for sale and shift their businesses to FM or DAB+ only too.

Please!

There is a way to put your opinion across in a blunt yet nice way. And there is the Alan Jones way where he continues to advocate violence against women. Jones commenting on 2GB this morning about New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern’s climate change policies:

I’m sure in about 6-12 months time, we’ll hear that ACMA has again slapped Alan Jones on the wrist with a wet lettuce leaf.

He needs to retire.

Absolutely disgusting comment from an absolutely disgusting man! Jacinda Ardern is so far above him as a person that it’s unfathomable to measure! Why do the management of this pathetic company and station allow him to get away with this garbage? Get rid of him!

Sadly, because he rates and (somehow) attracts advertisers to 2GB.

Nine chose a good week to buy into the rest of Macquarie

Dwayne Russell a big loss for AW, part of the original 2000s team too (2003/2004?)

But he’s been doing heaps at Fox Sports for about the same amount of time that keeps him busy, SEN obviously waved the cash too

From a newspaper in which it falls under the same parent company that 2GB is now fully part of.

The SMH is believing that because Alan Jones wins the breakfast ratings he has the most listeners. He doesn’t, that would be Kyle and Jackie O.

Edited.

Radioinfo reports that ME Bank has pulled advertising from 2GB in the wake of Alan Jones’ recent comments about NZ PM Jacinta Arden.

Will be interesting to see how Nine reacts to such a situation in future if/when they take full control. At the moment Jones relies on Singo’s backing. With Singo gone, Nine may not be so tolerant. They are much more concerned with image and such comments may not create the sort of image they want their stations to portray. I’m sure there must be some clause in Jones’ contract along the lines of not bringing the station into disrepute.

Most listened too is not the same as most individual listeners.
