Nine Radio (Music)

Just letting all know that Ace made another change. Magic 1278, 2ue and 4bh all share the same Competition Number - 1300 102 222 now

Another step in the Magic Classic Hits Network

Agree it will be a Classic Hits Network, but I seriously doubt they’ll call it Magic. Why would they when the 2UE and 4BH brands are so well known and the Magic brand in Melbourne is quite dubious these days? And the Magic brand has been tried in Sydney and Brisbane before and failed miserably both times. It would be completely insane.

2WS-FM was a well known brand but it didnt stop ARN from re-branding WS-FM to Gold 101.7 earlier this year right?

3xy is more well know brand but that did not stop AWA media in 1994 from changing the call sign from 3xy to 3ee as well

And that went well. :slightly_smiling_face:

They should never of performed the rebrand WSFM should have stayed. Radio should be local and it is why regional stations should never have been rebranded Triple M.

An Evening with MAGIC 1278’s Gavin Wood & Peter “Grubby” Stubbs steps back in time to the golden era of radio, where the voices of Gavin Wood and Peter “Grubby” Stubbs shaped Melbourne’s airwaves.

I noticed a major mistake

Gavin Wood and Grubby never worked at Magic 1278, However they worked at 3xy however

Gavin Miller is the Gavin that works at Magic 1278 though

Maybe there is something to be announced

Yes they frequently just call it ‘‘classic hits’’ when they make their generic all station announcements of the station they are listening to.

Technically 3XY became Magic 693, which then swapped frequencies with 1278 3AW.

Actually 3xy became 3ee changed frequencies from 1422 to 693 first then became Magic 693

Still the same licence though.

Yes Nine Radio owns the original 3xy license which Ace Radio leases

Magic 1278 is pushing the “now with more 70s” line again after it disappeared for a few months.

Change magic to 3XY and just call the network Greatest Hits (callsign)

Is there still 3XY Radio Hellas online on 1422am?

Yep. Still on 1422am, at least judging by what I can see online.

They also need to be more adventurous with their playlist and play some songs from the 70s and 80s that are rarely heard on radio today. They should be less safe and add some more energy to their station including playing some of the old 3XY jingles. Unfortunately, I believe under the T&Cs of their lease agreement they are unable to change the name of the station.

They can’t. There’s already a Greek-formatted radio station in Melbourne licensed with the 3XY name. While the 3XY of today no longer has any connection to the 3XY of the past, Magic legally cannot change their name to 3XY. To do that, the Greek station would have to change their name and, if applicable, their callsign.

Just as something, in August 1993, Hoyts Media (the owner of the Triple M Network at the time) bought KAFM Adelaide from Wesgo. The whole purpose of that was to essentially have KAFM adopting the 5MMM callsign and using the Triple M name.

Though one thing stood in their way, there was already a Triple M radio station in existence in Adelaide, a community station to be precise, with the 5MMM callsign.

Hoyts would then pay the community station for the 5MMM callsign and the Triple M name, which prompted 5MMM (the community station) to convert to 3DDD and become Three D Radio, granting Hoyts the ability to use the 5MMM callsign and the Triple M name on their newly-acquired KAFM station in Adelaide.

On 1st January 1994, KAFM was finally relaunched as Triple M.

Did you read your own post?

Then go on to outline how a radio station legally changed to a callsign already in use. :exploding_head:

Narrowcasters don’t have callsigns. 3XY isn’t actually in use, it’s just a branding decision. Much closer to the Kiss vs KIIS situation.

I would still think it’s a bad idea. There’s no brand value in 3XY among the demographic of the station - “Greatest Hits 1278” would be fine on its own.
