Yes it’s used a lot in the US. There have been some examples over the years in Australia, but I’m not aware of any current stations identifying this way. I had a feeling 2CH might have had “good time oldies” in the past.
I think Gold FM in Melbourne also used that early on.
There’s not many or any use it as branding in on air ID’s here AFAIK, & not even sure about using it in RDS.
The Oldies format is actually also called the Classic Hits format, in recent times Oldies, Classic Hits & Classic Rock have overlapped & intertwined.
I did for a short period of time after we changed the format of the station to Classic Hits, used Oldies on the Coast FM Gosford RDS, until management complained after comments from some listeners that they thought we were playing music from the 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s or that’s what they thought Oldies were, which is a given when Gen X & older grew up with music which is now old, but in their minds oldies music was from the period of their parents & grandparents growing up years.
It’s a change of mindset that’s hard to overcome (speaking from experience as a Gen X), that the music we grew up listening to in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s & even 90’s is now old & fits into the oldies category, the same as the music our grandparents listened to as Oldies for the early 20th century music when we were growing up.
2CA as well IIRC
Geelong Broadcasters used the name West Coast Oldies for a brief period on their narrowcast FM translators across Geelong/Surf Coast and Colac, i.e until 1341 AM test transmissions commenced in December 2023 in which it would be rebranded to 3GL.
back when they played lots of Elvis, Beatles, Stones et al.
4BH, 2UE and Magic 1278 schedules next week:
Breakfast shows as normal (BBQ Bob, Cathy Jubb, Jamie Row)
Mornings - Jon Vertigan
Afternoon - Emily Canning
Drive - Scott Menz
I’ve heard the same songs on them minutes apart.
That was before the newtroking. 2UE also had that but they seem to have abandoned that now.
Like playing Adele, Kelly clarkson, Ed Shearan? They are doing that.
But that is what they are doing, given that the playlists of all 3 stations are now identical.
Last night on Magic 1278, Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” from 2008
17 years old, it fits the “classic hits” theme. As long as they still play music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s I have no complaints about that.
I think it’s good they are shaking it up, 70s only felt excessively hoary to me but I do wonder at what year they’ll cut it off
It was never 70s only. Not sure why you would listen to a classic hits station if you want recent hits.
Personally that’s exactly what I want - classic hits from the 60s onwards, with a sprinkle of recent hits. Exactly the Breeze FM format.
I was listening to Sunday night 70s on Magic last night. Disappointed that the music was predictable and safe and stuff you hear every week. Where are the rarities that never get played. (eg) Hello this is Joannie, Beautiful Sunday, Music by John Miles, We belong to the Night (Ellen Foley), She Taught me how to love again(Lindsay Bjerre). Given Magic’s ratings they should be a lot more adventurous particularly during the evenings.
They’re all over at Vintage FM and their 70’s Sunday night program. From memory last night, they played -
Miguel Rios - Song of Joy
Jackson Browne - Loadout / Stay (The full song)
The Doors - Get Up & Dance
Chain - Black & Blue
Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23
The Sweet - Hell Raiser
..and as I was switching off for the night, a song from Royal Scots Dragoon Pipes & Drums Band (I can’t remember which song).
Much better variety than what 2UE (and others on the network) give us on a Sunday night.
