Nine Radio (Music)

I think the goal was to capture the 2CH market initially, now its WS listeners?

In my view they just need to have Rock/Pop/Easy oldies ie the charts of 60s-90s. Not always sleepy just great classic hits to keep you dancing through the day.

I think it is an easy music station that is transitioning to classic hits to align with the very successful 4BH, and Magic in Melbourne.

Let us not forget 2CH had the positioner “classic hits”, which worked well with the call sign. It was an own interpretation of “classic hits”. WS version of classic hits was very different from 2CH’s version. i98 was also a classic hits station when it first converted to FM and it was different as well. Heck even “Gold” in my view goes back to 2WS being a solid gold station and was an older format.

Better music and more of it on 2ST / 2EC etc is very different from the 90s 2day Better Music and more of it.

Anyway 2UE as classic hits can still be “easy” just different branding.

The easier choice for classic hits?

Just saying…

That actually works rather well

It feels like now that the branding assets of Magic 1278 and 3MP should swap. :stuck_out_tongue:

With 4BH, 2UE and Magic 1278 all now Classic Hits, 3MP is kinda now the outlier and so it feels kinda odd that Magic 1278 is the one with the different colour scheme and logo. I do like the 4BH/2UE/3MP logo, the roundness looks nice in RadioApp.

The style of Magic’s logo probably fits the style of station better than the curvy/bubbly logo that is on the other stations though

Agreed. I’d go with the Magic colours, as they also resonate more with the previous Pure Gold network colours (which is who they’re going after).

I kind of agree but I doubt they’ll mess with anything to do with 4BH, even the logo. It’s so successful compared to all their other metro stations it’s pretty much the flagship station.

For the first time the classic hits countdown on 2ue is the same as the one on Magic 1278. Both 1976

ACE should create the Magic Classic Hits Network with Magic 1278, Magic 954 and Magic 1116

Melbourne is the only one with a Easy Music Station now with 3mp, though ACE could bring back 2ch and 4kq from the dead by reduding the power of 2ue and 4bh on DAB+

Easy Music 2ch DAB and Easy Music 4kq

Would that work?

They tried that already. Brisbane didn’t like Magic and 2CH never really dropped their 2CH callsign.

Let’s not forget though that 4BH was ‘Easy Music’ when 4KQ was around, then changed to ‘Classic Hits’ before the advent of SEN. There was no change of format though.

They cant change station names under the agreement AFAIK.

I think there’s zero chance they will drop the 4BH moniker. Why would they jeopardize a station with those ratings.

I wonder if kiis 106.5 would of rated just the same if kept the name to MIX with Kyle and Jackie. My bet it would of been a similar success.

Let’s face it, 4BH could change its name to ‘Classic Hits’ and not lose a single listener. Many of 4BH’s current cohort of listeners were bolted on ‘Classic Hits 4KQ’ devotees. It’s not like they’re a bunch of 4BH listeners who have stuck with the station through thick and thin, even during the ill-fated MacSports years. No.

It’s not like they’re saying ‘I only listen to 4BH because it’s called 4BH’. That’s ridiculous. BBQ Bob is sounding great this morning. He’s playing A-ha, Pilot, David Bowie, Freda Payne. Classic Hits. He’d still be rating a 9.0+ if the station was called ‘Classic Hits (Magic) 1116’ or whatever.

I don’t think the name would have made any difference with K&J in Melbourne

No. Too much baggage with the name ‘Mix’. When Mix launched they even had a talk host - Mike Carlton - doing breakfast. So the Mix name was always skewed older, much like the AC KHMX, the station it was modelled on. To appeal to a younger audience, they appropriately copied 102.7 KIIS. And it worked.
