Nine Radio (Music)

I kind of agree but I doubt they’ll mess with anything to do with 4BH, even the logo. It’s so successful compared to all their other metro stations it’s pretty much the flagship station.

For the first time the classic hits countdown on 2ue is the same as the one on Magic 1278. Both 1976

ACE should create the Magic Classic Hits Network with Magic 1278, Magic 954 and Magic 1116

Melbourne is the only one with a Easy Music Station now with 3mp, though ACE could bring back 2ch and 4kq from the dead by reduding the power of 2ue and 4bh on DAB+

Easy Music 2ch DAB and Easy Music 4kq

Would that work?

They tried that already. Brisbane didn’t like Magic and 2CH never really dropped their 2CH callsign.

Let’s not forget though that 4BH was ‘Easy Music’ when 4KQ was around, then changed to ‘Classic Hits’ before the advent of SEN. There was no change of format though.

They cant change station names under the agreement AFAIK.

I think there’s zero chance they will drop the 4BH moniker. Why would they jeopardize a station with those ratings.

I wonder if kiis 106.5 would of rated just the same if kept the name to MIX with Kyle and Jackie. My bet it would of been a similar success.

Let’s face it, 4BH could change its name to ‘Classic Hits’ and not lose a single listener. Many of 4BH’s current cohort of listeners were bolted on ‘Classic Hits 4KQ’ devotees. It’s not like they’re a bunch of 4BH listeners who have stuck with the station through thick and thin, even during the ill-fated MacSports years. No.

It’s not like they’re saying ‘I only listen to 4BH because it’s called 4BH’. That’s ridiculous. BBQ Bob is sounding great this morning. He’s playing A-ha, Pilot, David Bowie, Freda Payne. Classic Hits. He’d still be rating a 9.0+ if the station was called ‘Classic Hits (Magic) 1116’ or whatever.

I don’t think the name would have made any difference with K&J in Melbourne

No. Too much baggage with the name ‘Mix’. When Mix launched they even had a talk host - Mike Carlton - doing breakfast. So the Mix name was always skewed older, much like the AC KHMX, the station it was modelled on. To appeal to a younger audience, they appropriately copied 102.7 KIIS. And it worked.

2UE’s new Classic Hits logo has now been updated on their website.

I still think they should’ve kept either Trevor, Gareth or a Sydney-based jock on-air for Breakfast.

UPDATE on earlier comment stating 2UE & 4BH should take the Magic logo, come to think of it, maybe it’s easier for 3MP & Magic to change logos rather than the rest of the network. Magic could adopt the current 3MP logo, and 3MP could introduce its own logo.

Then again, is this really worth it? Who would’ve thought the ACE metro network would love the Magic network over the 3MP network?

Why do you keep saying network?

There a selection of stations with common formats and announcers who float between each station. But they’re entirely local (well, VT’d from somewhere specifically for that market), and I believe still have local music logs for each station

They describe themselves as a network.

the definition of network doesn’t necessarily relate to program content. All stations can be completely local in terms of product but still be part of a network of common-owned or managed stations.

That’s true. And likewise a network can also exist without common ownership but with (some) shared programming.

So a few things in one post

Firstly, I wouldn’t be upset if they changed the 4BH colours to the Magic colours, the orange they use as the background on the Magic 1278 website is nice, it’s just the logo that’s not great. The 4BH logo just looks so much better to me instead of that “not quite a rectangle” rectangle.

I don’t think they’ll change anything to do with 4BH though, it’s a powerhouse in Brisbane now and it’s one of the rare times in radio I can think of where Brisbane is probably considered more important than Sydney or Melbourne - lucky us.

Secondly, when 2UE is playing the right news opener, I noted they’ve added a reference to the fact they’re turning 100 this year (this Jan 26th according to Wikipedia), so that’s pretty awesome. Also seems like 2UE doesn’t push the whole “30 minutes of continuous Classic Hits” coming out of the news the same way 4BH does.

Thirdly, yea Ace do refer to the ‘Ace Radio Network’, I hear that as part of every 4BH News opener. Most of the time though from what I’ve observed, each of the stations has their own music log. For the announcers who are shared across Australia, they actually do put effort into including references to local things in their talk breaks and generally pronounce things properly - it makes the station feel like all the announcers are local, even though some aren’t.

In terms of the networked shows, here’s the current list according to their website:

  • Classic Hits Lunchbox 12-1pm weekdays (4BH and Magic 1278 - although I imagine 2UE will eventually take this, I’m surprised they didn’t from today actually since Gavin Miller is now on 2UE from 10am-2pm so it’d fit in seamlessly)
  • Classic Hits Countdown 10am-12pm Sundays (4BH, 2UE and Magic 1278)
  • Sunday Night 70s 6pm-12am Sundays (4BH and 2UE - not sure why Magic 1278 doesn’t take this)

Not counting Sunday Morning 60s because the website says 2UE, 4BH and 3MP all have different announcers for this, so it doesn’t sound particularly networked, although I’ve never listened myself because I’m not up that early on a Sunday :stuck_out_tongue:

Lastly, looks like from the website update today that Jamie Row is now permanently on 4BH weeknights 7pm-12am (in additional to his Melbourne breakfast show on Magic 1278). That’s pretty awesome, Jamie was great over summer and so I think that’s a pretty strong lineup on 4BH now with BBQ Bob, Scott Menz, Gavin Miller, Cathy Jubb and Jamie Row (with Dom Rinaldo doing Sunday Night 70s).
