I don’t think I’ve ever known ACMA to block a sale? Have they ever? Given this sale was to fulfil a regulatory requirement I’m not sure on what basis they’d refuse it.
Speaking of CH, There owned by Sports Entertainment Network & they air One Talkback Program on Sunday Nights.
I agree. I’ll eat my hat if ACMA ever did anything to benefit the listener.
I’ve been listening to 4BH this afternoon while working from home. I think they’ve got the music mostly right now to satisfy ex-4KQ listeners. They might just be missing that odd rare track that 4KQ throw in on weekdays, and have many of on weekends. They will need to broaden the playlist on weekends. Then they just need some local announcers and to bring across the breakfast crew. As an aside I was in my doctor’s surgery and they have had 4KQ on for years and years - they still listen via good old-fashioned AM radios too! I asked the receptionist what they were going to do once 4KQ finished. Firstly, she knew what I was talking about, and secondly she said they would be switching to 4BH… I got the sense it was very reluctantly! She also commented that it was “absolutely ridiculous” that 4KQ was being killed off…
I’ve been listening to 4BH on DAB while in my car,the music isn’t too bad but they could do with more variety…
It’s a shame also there’s no local presenters, they’re all from down south and voice tracked ![]()
Don’t worry too much about voice tracking from Down South (its the same on 2UE weekdays except for brekky). The music is the main ingredient…the voices are mostly some background weave for this format. I think ACE are doing a good job for the voice trackers…pleasant and inoffensive.
I’ve noticed over the last few weekends that 2UE seems to have stopped airing Swans and Giants AFL games. AFL Nation still lists 2UE as taking the games each week, but it seems to not actually be happening.
I’ll try to remember to check 4BH and 2UE during Lions v Giants tomorrow.
When they were taking the games it seemed to be analog only with DAB and streaming playing music without voicetracking or news.
What Ace should do is what ARN is doing with Hot Tomato Gold and play 90’s on Magic 1278 as well. Hot Tomato Gold plays 60,70, 80s and 90’s
I think most people want that as well
Live and local keep me listening to the radio, although I may not be in the majority.
If there are no local and live announcers, I will switch to ad-free Foxtel Music or an ad- free streaming service.
The announcer allows me tolerate the ads. It’s turns the radio into music and company.
Part of the appeal of 4KQ is the local focus. The discussion of local events, past and present are a key part of its success. Plus the log is not just an oldies/classic hits format - it is unique, and not found on any other station in the world. Lose that and the attraction for me is much less. I can easily source generic classic hits music formats elsewhere.
If the music is good, the sound is of a good quality and if the ads also sound good and there are not too many of them, then I don’t mind whether the announcers are voice tracked from another state. Smooth set the standard with voice-tracking and the station is so successful because the music and sound overall is good. The same goes with Coles and some of the other DAB stations like Oldskool 90s, Dance Hits, WSFM 80s and MMM 90s.
Correct.
ACE will need to replicate more than just the music format in order for 4BH to bring listeners across.
Don’t forget there’s still a strong perception that 4BH plays easy listening, not classic hits.
Maybe 4bh can talk to SEN and ask if they can swap frequency. So perhaps it will reduce the complaints in Brisbane that way. ARN might not like this idea so much.
So 693 AM 4BH, 1116 SEN (same as Melbourne).
Off-air receivers in Sydney and Brisbane confirm 2UE and 4BH on AM analog are both playing music. Neither are taking the Brisbane V GWS AFL match despite being listed in AFL Nation’s list for this game. So it looks like these stations have stopped taking the AFL.

It’s a great idea but I think it’s doubtful. Would be good though. If that was to happen they should just call it Classic Hits 693 and drop the 4BH altogether. It would be quite seamless for the listener.
In actual fact there’s nothing to technically stop 4BH from swapping callsigns to 4KQ if SEN agreed to change theirs.

Good news.
This was a thought I had too, for continuity of listener experience have 693 continue the music and 1116 take the sports talk programming. Of course it would be much easier to make happen if there was common arrangement, which there is not.
This could’ve happened if ACE purchased 4KQ. Then SEN could’ve leased 1116AM from Nine Radio.
After 2 days of listening to 4BH I think they have more variety, now they throw in some classic rock hits,ie:INXS,Blondie,Cold Chisel, etc
If they keep playing more variety like this they will pick up many ex 4KQ listeners

I agree. They just need to sound a little more live and local. A couple of local shifts and they’ll do very well I think.
