Nine Radio (Music)

I checked on the Radio App and it’s a different log.

I note no changes to 2UE on DAB. Still 72k 2-A. I wonder if they will give ACE full control of DAB…

How is 3MP cutting & dicing the DAB down there? Apologies if this has already been posted.

4BH on DAB sounds awful.

DAB generally sounds awful

Dead air on Magic during the 5.30am news, only the weather and the ad before it made it to air

Issues across most stations that take 3AW news. Earlier 5.00 am news out of 3AW did not go to air anywhere.

It can sound pretty good with enough bits of course.

But you really need 64 kbps or better.
Unfortunately most stations are less.

Yes I was listening to Gold 1242 at 5am, no news but Radioapp did disconnect me so I was thinking it was just an issue at my end

Len Johns did appogise on 1332 3SH around 5.45 about the lack of national news at 5.30 and it was a wide issues not only affecting 3SH. He made another apology on Magic about 30 minutes later

It’s affecting multiple networks as well, not just Nine/Ace.

I remember a decade ago when Fairfax were running it, they were using 88kbs and it sounded fantastic. Better than any other DAB station. They had 4BC on 88kbs and The Buckle on 80kbs.

yes, it would be great if ACE could use 128 kbs and put Magic on DAB in Sydney and Brisbane.

What content was on “The Buckle”?

I recall the name but don’t recall listening to it really.

Country music.

It was then replaced by NTS in 2013.

Agree. 64kbps should be a minimum for any music station. I actually don’t mind DAB. There’s some good formats around. I don’t mind 97.3’s 80’s, Smooth Relax, Nova 10’s, MMM 90’s and Coles Radio (although I still call that instore radio). All these stations are well put together.

It sounds bad even for the bitrate it runs at. There’s a few other 48k music stations in Melbourne, indeed a few 40kbps ones that to my ears all sound much better.

I’d love to know if my guess is right - that ACE are sending through a compressed stream that then Nine are recompressing, but then their Web stream sounds just as bad as DAB, if not worse.

AM doesn’t sound that different to me from the old Magic to now, but then the only am radio I ever use is in the car and most of that is on tram tracks, so my expectations are low…

Mostly, for music, I listen to ABC Classic which is very clear at (I think) 80kbs these days… but I fancy the overall audio on most of my receivers is better, somehow more satisfying, on FM

I’ve only just started listening to Magic again since Ace took over but I’ve noticed a fair chunk of their ads are from 3MP (businesses located on the peninsula) and tourism ads for other Ace markets such as Swan Hill

Make sense - they haven’t had much time to build up direct clients over the rest of Melbourne or get onto national bookings yet.
What sort of ads are 2UE and 4BH playing?
