Yeah the 1116 stereo pilot was switched off at the transmitter a couple of years ago now, as the feed to the site was mono only (can’t remember who on here confirmed that). Part of me had secretly hoped it might magically get switched on again now that there is a music station to be using the frequency again, but I suspect the mono feed issue (plus a lack of desire) will mean it doesn’t happen.
On the promotion of the changeover, I’ve just listened to about 10 minutes of 4BC and heard the change to 882 mentioned three times, compared to none in about three hours this morning on 4BH. Stark difference!
Note that I recorded 3 hours of audio yet only heard this once throughout…
4BC by comparison have included it in the intros to news, weather and traffic segments, as well as advertisements. I’ll see if I can post some of them later.
For the most part, Sydney AM radio has traditionally stuck to saying the individual numbers for three numbered frequencies and double digit numbers for the four numbered frequencies. The primary exception to this rule being “Eleven Oh Seven” for rather obvious reasons, but otherwise a fairly logical setup.
Personally I prefer “Triple One Six” to “Eleven Sixteen” but find it interesting that “Eight Eight Two” or “Eight Eighty Two” has been preferred to “Eighty Eight Two”!
It just sounds disconnected, that you’ve split a number up with the biggest bit at the front, the 6 just kinda hangs off on its own, like you’d expect another digit to follow.
Apparently they used to just go with ‘Radio 11’ - which I suppose sidesteps it entirely…
I always just thought it related to the position on the old AM dial - you would say “eleven sixteen” or “six twelve” as the first number was where you’d (roughly) find the station on an analogue dial. But admittedly I’d never given it that much thought
The lead story on the 4BC 8am news, just minutes before the switch and which was also on 4BH, was all about what was happening to 4BC. There was no specific mention at all of what was happening to 4BH. It was almost as if Nine didn’t care whether 4BH listeners switched to 1116 or went elsewhere
Maybe a little off topic to the switch of frequency, how is the audio quality of 4BH these days? I remember people were posting it was a flat. I wonder if it is “better” when compared to when it was launched. 2UE sounds pretty good on AM and DAB, although I wish they used 128k at 3A on DAB.
It is sad it was like the didn’t care about the 4BH listeners. Hopefully some 4BC listeners stick to 1116. Although I must admit Brisbane is lucky to have 4kq (when compared to Sydney) and would blow away 4BH with more life as a music station.
God, they could have tried harder to get a better text number! Also amazing that there was no mention of 4BH moving to 1116. Who is that nasely breakfast jock? Awful voice.
