Nine News Presenters and Reporters (2020-Feb 2025)

Says who? Have you spoken to Georgie about this? The way things are going she might not have any choice.

I’ve been immersed in the industry long enough to know how it works. Would you want to read daytime bulletins after having been on Today? Bottom line is Georgie, and many others across the networks, are earning a lot of money for little work and I’m not sure how much longer that trend can continue.

Mel Doyle read daytime bulletins after being on Sunrise.

“Immersed in the industry” - what, by reading this forum? I read it too (obviously!) but I would never claim to have much inside knowledge. Apart from the tidbits we generously get from members who actually are in the industry.

Georgie left the Today show five years ago. In TV world that’s practically ancient history. I’m sure she understands better than most how ruthless the industry is. And yes, that means agreeing to read daytime news if the alternative is being let go from such a well-paying job. I’d do it too - in fact I imagine most in that position would.

Deb Knight got moved to Saturday ACA.

I suspect she wouldn’t want to read Sydney news only after Today if this sort of sentiment was prevalent. I doubt she’s as particular with what she wants and what she gets. Most likely got told that’s what you get, deal with it or leave and Georgie accepted it.

Plenty of people do it.

Very different circumstances. That was back when the Afternoon News had more significance and Mel was only there because she was moved on from Sunrise and needed something else to do.

I have done and do a lot more in the media industry than just reading this site.

Again, this has nothing to do with me or anyone here. The point of my original post was that the days of big salaries in the media are coming to an end. Look at the cost cutting taking place everywhere this year.

I know a lot of ex-journos and media people who have happily moved on from TV News because they simply got to a stage where they’d had enough, it was no longer a challenge and were ready to move on. They’d rather go elsewhere than take a backwards step reading bulletins such as daytime ones. Been there, done that, sort of thing.

ACA is a flagship show. Daytime bulletins are not.

Here’s a thought:

Jayne does Today, Today Extra News and then the Morning News.

Then Amber (or Pete but i doubt he would want to do that) does Sydney’s Afternoon news.

In that case, I completely apologise and take back my earlier remarks.

You’re right, and it’s happening all over the world. Only today there was an article somewhere discussing how so many American presenters are moving on, because the networks can no longer afford to pay their massive, massive salaries (as much as US$30 million in some cases!).

My earlier point - and again, I apologise for being a bit antagonistic - was that people like Georgie Gardner (and other high-profile presenters) are doubtless going to be asked to do a lot more for their high salaries in the future. Some might well choose to move on, but I suspect most will agree to do the extra work. And even then, it’ll probably be for less money than they get now.

No doubt it will get to the point where they go “do more or face pay cuts”.

No need to apologise, all good!! I should’ve been clearer from the outset :slightly_smiling_face:

How did Laura go reading? Was that her first time presenting?

Watched Georgie read tonight and was reminded how good of a newsreader she is.

I wonder how much longer they’re going to persist with this silence regarding Jono. It’s just so unusual. He’s still listed as their sports reader. There’s been no mention of him for months. It’s just so strange.

I don’t understand this obsession with needing to know why anyone is absent. We’ve seen time amd time again that people have illnesses, sick family members or other reasons which take them away. Often, they’re not ready to announce it when they depart for many reasons.

There could also just be an end of contract, taking an extrnded leave or absence or a legal issue which they don’t want to discuss publicly until it is sorted. Whatever the case, it’s good it happens but it really shouldn’t be expected to be publicly announced.

This isn’t a normal absence. It’s an extremely unusual situation. He has been gone for months. Just disappeared.

When has that ever happened before?

I think it’s definitely interesting enough to note on here.

This was normal years ago. It’s just that everyone feels like they need to share everything these days or be harassed into doing so.

I’ve had workmates and employees take time off work and not share the reason why due to difficult family situations. You have to respect their wishes.

When have I asked for a reason? Don’t put words in my mouth.

A simple “Jonathan Uptin will be absent for the foreseeable future” would be a normal way to handle it.

But nothing. Literally nothing. Radio silence.

He could’ve asked to just leave quietly as well - as this point though, it’s clear that he isn’t coming back for sometime.

Exactly. Or he could have taken a short break but due to circumstances beyond his control, he needed nore time. I don’t see why anyone has to live their life publicly if they don’t want to.
