@nationalnews lf ratings drop in Sydney having a qualified meteorologist will bring viewers back in droves?. How long is the actual weather segment?
Just my opinion but viewers watch a news bulletin because they trust and respect the newsreader and know the network is delivering excellent content.
I do understand your points but at the moment anyway it’s a non issue in my opinion.
I thought you were talking about the Sydney market.
You do realise that the meteorologists use very little of their knowledge in their 1 minute segment? The bureau brief them and they present the forecast.
Just because a news reporter isn’t a politician or a judge doesn’t stop them doing a politics or courts story. They research it and then present the story.
Same thing with weather.
The meteorology thing is a seven gimmick. Keep in mind David Brown has been sacked several times by seven already for being boring.

Early- Lara Vella presenting the Early News this week
Tony Jones presenting in Melbourne this week with Clint Stanaway on sport and Rebecca Judd on weather.
He is likely to be presenting Monday - Friday. Just saw a promo featuring him for tonight’s news after a newsbreak.

How do we know that it might not be another Matt White situation? It’s quite possible that Rebecca Maddern might be contracted to only present The AFL Footy Show for Nine and nothing else.
In any case, Rebecca Maddern is definitely a major gain for Nine (whether she’s involved with news or otherwise) and a massive loss for Seven in Melbourne.
@SydneyCityTV good point as always we don’t know as yet what she is contracted to do at Nine.
But if Nine are smart they would have Bec join the Melbourne News team.

[/quote] Like Emma Freedman. Nine News Melbourne anchor, future Today host, I really hope that we see Bec in the news and current affairs department almost immediately. We have always wondered who can replace Hitch when he leaves. Tony Jones (no), Brett McLeod (no), Alicia Loxley ( like Melissa Doyle, yes but not quite ready for the solo anchor just yet) and Jo Hall I assume won’t want it- Bec Maddern IMO is the only one at GTV who has potential, so put her weekend anchor.
I think it’s pretty clear Tony Jones will replace Hitch. I doubt we will see Bec on GTV. However I can see her filling in on national bulletins and on Today.

[/quote] I never said he won’t. I was simply saying that Bec is the only one, IMO, at Nine Melbourne at the moment that has the potential. From what I have read in this forum, people really don’t like Tony Jones and Brett McLeod and the ratings reflect that. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend TJ has Hitch’s replacement, the same with McLeod.

[/quote] If she is going to appear on any news and current affairs, I daresay that would include at least reporting for Nine News Melbourne. Just remembered, remember when Georgie left Today Bec actually was rumoured to be one of her replacements. At least she might fill-in.
If Rebecca Maddern was to join Nine’s news/current affairs department, surely the network would be very wise to make her the face of a possible Melbourne edition of Nine’s Afternoon News in the future?
BTW I’m not trying to produce more speculation material here, just a thought more than anything else. 
Is co-hosting The Footy Show the right path to a job with Nine News/current affairs though? Seems more like taking her career in a new direction.
I can see Rebecca Maddern becoming the fill-in presenter for Peter Hitchener on weeknights, instead of Tony Jones.
Would much prefer her over Tony.

I can’t. Nine is clearly grooming Tony Jones for the job and Tony is doing his best to raise his profile beyond sport by substituting for Neil Mitchell on 3AW. The Nine media release makes no mention of a role on Nine News. I find that a little odd. Perhaps Maddern is content to focus on The Footy Show. Nine would be silly not to utilise her talents in the newsroom at some point.
After reading many articles about Bec tonight not one mentions her joining NIne news team,just wishful thinking on my part that she would join news team…
What really confirmed it for me was a tweet from Kate McGrath who is chief of staff at NIne News Melbourne she said to Bec welcome to Channel 9 family as co-host The Footy Show.If she was also joining news team in some capacity Kate would have mentioned it.
While Bec is a co host of The Footy Show, I find it difficult to think that nine will give her a news reading role on any 6pm news bulletin. A 6pm news reader needs serious credibility which will unfortunately be lost while co hosting The Footy Show. Possibly fill in rolls on Today/Extra where the news is not treated so seriously.
Just my thoughts . . .
I wonder what Rebecca Maddern’s role might be outside the AFL season. Is there an opening for a host for Nine’s cricket coverage over summer?
