ex Seven West reporter Gary Adshead is returning to Nine Perth to be the State Political Editor.
Nine News hires Gary Adshead
Nine News has welcomed the appointment of Perthâs number one investigative reporter, Gary Adshead, in the role of State Political Editor.
Adshead has long been one of Western Australiaâs foremost journalists and was most recently State Political Editor of The West Australian, before leaving the newspaper in April.
Adsheadâs exclusives include a series of stories about an MPâs fake overseas police service medal, which led to a by-election the government lost.
He was named West Australian journalist of the year at the 2018 WA Media Awards and has won multiple awards for his investigations of organised crime, politics and breaking news, including the lead in the drinking water scandal at the new Perth Childrenâs Hospital.
âWe are thrilled to welcome Gary to Nine News,â said Michael Best, the recently appointed Director of News for Nine Perth. âHe is without a doubt one of WAâs foremost journalists. He breaks the biggest and most important stories in Perth.
âI have long admired Garyâs work, going right back to when he was the only TV reporter on the HMAS Adelaide rescue of yachtsman Tony Bullimore. He brings with him a wealth of experience, contacts, and a âtake no prisonersâ approach to finding the truth. He will be a great asset to Nine News as we look to continue our growth in the six oâclock bulletin in the West.â
A journalist since 1984, Adshead has worked across television, radio and print. His early years included time at A Current Affair. He has also worked as the Mornings and Drive program host on Radio 6PR and as a trusted political commentator and columnist on political affairs in Western Australia.
âIn many ways, returning to Nine is like coming home,â said Adshead. âSome of my biggest reporting moments were during my time with Nine News and A Current Affair. Iâm now looking forward to breaking and telling the stories that matter to West Australians each night in the news bulletin.â
Good add to Nine News Perth, however his TV reporting skills are poor. 7 News Perth utilised him a few times during their broadcast and he wasnât very good. Hopefully with more practise in his new full time job he will be better
Tessa Hardy (QTQ court reporter) made an appearance on Nine News Sydney tonight.
Michael Usher (even though they wouldnât say it publicly, I bet Nine News Sydney wishes they still had him!) was 26k ahead of Mark Burrows on Saturday night.
And yes, I know that Burrows outrated Ferguson by 36k on Federal Election night but letâs be honest, itâs a bit like saying that Amber Sherlock & Belinda Russell are better weather presenters than Tim BaileyâŚ
Some of Mark Burrowsâ past blunders (the âEaster S*** Showâ and âAmber or Belinda?â slip-ups come to mind) while being quite amusing, have only re-enforced the opinion that he should stick to reporting.
Again, I ask the question: What do Darren Wick/Simon Hobbs see in Burrows that they donât in superior (well, thatâs my opinion anyway) fill-in presenters like Jayne Azzopardi & Sophie Walsh? Same couldâve been said about Julie Snook before she left Nine, only in a low profile position while dodgy talent was and still is seen on a nightly basis in higher profile postions.
Burrows is 10x better than Jayne Azzopardi. I find her completely overrated and her presenting style is awkward. She has this strange smile on the face no matter what the story.
Sophie Walsh has had regular presenting experience in her time at Nine; she filled in for Alison Ariotti on Nine News Queensland while she was on maternity leave in the first half of 2016 and has in recent times intermittently presented the national morning news and Sydney afternoon news whenever Davina Smith has been absent.
She has also presented the Christmas Day bulletins for two separate markets: in Queensland in 2015, and Sydney last year.
Thus there is no reason to believe she cannot do a brilliant job presenting Nine News Sydney on Fridays and Saturdays on a regular basis.
I reckon, had she remained in Queensland, she and Tim Arvier couldâve formed a fierce co-presenting team on weekends. After she left for Sydney, Luke Bradnam took her place as the secondary weather presenter on Nine News Queensland.
This is Arvier presenting National Nine News Darwin back in 2007 -
When did Julie Snook leave?
It was reported in The Sunday Telegraph about a month ago that sheâd be leaving Nine to become a freelancer.
Though this means she could be seen on Nine News once again in the not-too-distant future.
Case in point: after Brad McEwan finished up with Ten News Melbourne in April last year, he suddenly popped up on the Sydney bulletin in July last year, presenting the sport.
She hasnât removed any of the Nine references on her Instagram or Twitter. When was she last seen on-air?
A week or so ago? Havenât seen her sinceâŚ
Trying to promote the weather segment more. In response to Jane Bunn recent popularity.
Wednesday 29 May - Thursday 30 May :
Carrie-Anne Greenbank is presenting Afternoon News in Melbourne.
Has Ebony Cavallaro relocated to the UK? She has been there for a while.
I doubt it. I think they are trying to relieve Amelia Adamsâ duties by covering Best in the UK. I would expect Nine to announce the Europe and US appointments (and any other subsequential changes) in one press statement⌠so the next month or so.
I think Rob Morrison (Brisbane) would be a good appointment for either role. I can just see it in him that he can cover overseas stories.
Friday 31 May -
Zara James is presenting Early News.
Brett McLeod is presenting Afternoon News in Melbourne.
Friday to Sunday -
Justine Conway is back presenting weather in Melbourne.
