Nine News Content and Appearance

I think it’s time they did that in a different way now. Maybe internally have a Peter Harvey Award for best newcomer of the year or something like that.

I would hate it if Peter Hitchener doesn’t do an opening voiceover for Alicia Loxley and Tom Steinfort.

For a network that likes to show they have the No. 1 Gold Coast bulletin, they sure hate to spend real money on it.

I don’t think we should be expecting that the Gold Coast gets anything like the nice video wall sets that Brisbane and others get.

  1. They are not allowed to split ads from Brisbane, so they won’t generate any extra ad spend from local customers

  2. It’s at 5.30pm, so not in prime-time.

  3. It’s only a sub market of 700,000.

  4. It’s Number 1 anyway.

How come they’re not allowed to split ads? They’re obviously allowed to split promos / updates aren’t they? How does that work? Is it the same for 7?

Yes, it’s the same for all networks.

Only 7 N.NSW, 9NBN and WIN10 can sell local ad spots on the Gold Coast.

I think they got special permission to split for local news.

Same deal on the NSW Central Coast where Sydney is a straight relay on all of 7, 9 and 10. The Melbourne relays into Geelong are the same, as is Brisbane to the southern Sunshine Coast.

We hear this all the time but then we also hear it’s hard to quantify because 9/7’s ratings are mixed with Hot Seat/The Chase… so how do we know?
I’d be interested to know some numbers of the margin between 9 and 7 GC News…

Nine must get some detailed breakdown of Gold Coast numbers so they can make the claim. Seven don’t seem to dispute it.

That’s so interesting. Hadn’t picked up on that before.

I guess that explains why we’ve never seen 7 or 9 try Geelong local news down here.

And that Geelong is only about 250,000 viewers vs 5 million in Melbourne, so would have a very small impact on the Melbourne ratings. Whereas Brisbane is 2.4 mil with another 700k on the Gold Coast, so a much bigger impact there.

Got ya.

Each metro market is broken down into zones each with their own ratings numbers. Brisbane’s includes the GC as a separate zone so it’s easy to get numbers.

Also, the news bulletins are often sponsored and that runs as a separate advert to the Brisbane market.

So can they run local ads during the Gold Coast bulletins?

Interesting graphical error

The stories that made the headlines :joy:

Also, what is with them relying so heavily on present tense? “Police charging the man this morning.” “The car slamming into the truck last night.” “The man pleading guilty today.”

They do - the two examples above are local, but not just that. The ad breaks are very different during that timeslot - the length and timing of the breaks is different and the ads that run don’t match though some ads run in both markets.

Imagine those ad spots are worth a lot. Direct chance to target local audience.

Never expected. But something that reflects the design style of the metro sets, and looks like they spent more than a few bucks, would be well deserved.

The Gold Coast used to have a smaller simpler version of the previous 9News wooden sets. Not impossible to do something similar today.

They need a decent desk and a green screen.
