What purpose does/would it serve? Just a waste of money

Same argument could be made for Melbourne and Brisbane. Sydney got a new desk because after the move out of Willoughby to North Sydney, Today would be using the news set.

What purpose does it serve in Melbourne and Brisbane?

Agree that there was no purpose for those upgrades and that it was a waste of money for them too.

Former Nine News Queensland director Amanda Paterson engaged high-profile employment and media lawyer John Laxon on Friday, The Australian reports.

A staff email from News & Current Affairs boss Fiona Dear said, “I wanted to let you know that QTQ News Director Amanda Paterson has finished up with Nine today.

“While we formalise and internal and external recruitment process to replace the role, Kate Donnison has agreed to step in on a short-term basis until QTQ EP Brendan Hockings returns from the US and his annual leave.

“Brendan will then act in the role until we finalise the recruitment process to ensure stability in leadership during this time.”

Sacked Nine news boss Amanda Paterson calls in the lawyers

The Australian article also mentions

A Current Affair’s Queensland bureau chief Kate Donnison will act as news director on a short-term basis until executive producer Brendan Hockings returns from annual leave.

Insiders told Nine that the decision to put Donnison in the role temporarily had resulted in staff in Brisbane’s news team being “overlooked” for the position, and had “put noses out of joint”.

Staff at Nine have also been given a stern warning by management to not reveal any information to the media about matters relating to the cultural review.

The missive sent to staff on Thursday, seen by The Australian, told employees: “The report told us that leaking information is a tactic used to abuse power or authority and this behaviour will not be tolerated at Nine.”

They’ve lost their QLD and SYD news directors both within the space of a week?!

I would say both have been removed due to certain allegations occurring while in charge. To what they are, we don’t know.

“Nine can confirm further leadership changes were communicated to its TV News division today,” a Nine spokesperson said.

“An internal and external recruitment process is now underway for News Directors in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.”

Melbourne News boss Hugh Nailon will reportedly be taking on expanded responsibilities.

Another senior executive, speaking anonymously, said no further senior departures from the news division were expected.

Wonder if they could do what 10 does and just have a national news directors, then local ‘editors’?

Surely Jeremy Pudney in Adelaide would be on the chopping block too, numerous years in the gig but no impact.

No doubt - guy before him was given a few years after Nine brought the station before he was axed

Adelaide and Perth have always been difficult markets for Nine News to crack when Seven News has been the top-rating service in those markets nearly every year this century. Not only that, there’s also the loyalty factor that leans towards Seven.

In the City of Churches, Nine’s struggles have continued even after John Riddell (in 2019) and Jane Doyle (2022) retired from the Seven News desk.
