Nine News and Current Affairs

Weather was presented from their balcony at 50 Cavill Ave.

Why was it at 5pm?

QQQ likely scheduled their bulletin at 5:00pm to accommodate Nine’s initial attempt to “strip” the original Millionaire format into a nightly series, rebranded as Super Millionaire, which was promoted as having a faster pace.

Other metro and regional affiliates aired the half-hour Millionaire following The Price is Right—the latter likely occupying a pre-Gold Coast News slot, based on the provided cap.

The nightly Millionaire experiment was short-lived, axed after just two weeks, with an extended edition of The Price is Right subsequently taking over the timeslot.

I enjoyed this graphics package overall.

Random question, does anyone know where they used to film/broadcast National Nine News in this year (and previous years) from? A small section of Studio 2 or somewhere else in Willoughby?

I figure it wasn’t Studio 1 as the entirety of that was the apartment set for Today and I didn’t think Studio 3 existed until Feb 2010 when it was first launched.

All good if not, I just have always been somewhat curious :slightly_smiling_face:.

I think it was studio 3

Ahh nice one, thanks! That would make the most sense overall when you think about it

Found some footage of Peter Overton presenting sport on National Nine News in mid-1998. To my knowledge, however, I don’t think he appeared on any of their Wide World of Sports coverage.

Who could also forget when QTQ claimed that reporters Melissa Mallet and Cameron Price were “near Beerwah” when reporting on the news that Daniel Morcombe’s remains had been found, in 2011?

In Price’s case, the Nine chopper was on the helipad outside their studios, and rival Channel Seven caught them out.

Both Mallet and Price were sacked by QTQ in the week immediately following the controversy.

Price got picked up by 7 didn’t he? Then left journalism altogether?

Correct - though he joined Sky News Australia as a Sydney reporter weeks after Choppergate.

He then had a five-year stint as a reporter for Seven News in Sydney (between 2016-21), and is now the CEO of his own company (LeadStory).

Practising for next month - Afternoon News 2015.

QTQ also had its own local morning news between 2014-17… and then it was quietly axed in 2017.

I had always thought it was a good innovative at the time, especially during daylight saving.

Yes - launched 6 October 2014

History showed in the 90s and 00s that viewers didn’t seem to mind the continual changes at Nine News Queensland.

In the early 2000s, Jillian Whiting replaced Heather Foord on weeknights when the latter wanted to spend more time with her family, before Foord resumed on weeknights in the second half of 2004; Whiting returned to weekends when she too became a mother, before Melissa Downes replaced her in 2006.

All the while Bruce Paige took over from Mike London on weeknights in the mid-1990s (who could forget the spat between the two in 2003 that resulted in London walking out on Nine that year?).

But despite the game of musical chairs going on at QTQ, they were still strong news ratings leaders up until the end of 2006, when BTQ upped its game and lured John Schluter (from down the road) and Sharyn Ghidella (from the Today show) to their network.

I believe she and/or Davina Smith were deployed from TCN to QTQ in the immediate aftermath of Choppergate in 2011. I also know Joel Dry moved to Brisbane (from Adelaide) towards the end of 2011 as well.

Walsh returning to TCN in mid-2016 was a huge loss for QTQ especially after she’d impressed in filling in for Alison Ariotti on the news desk in the first half of the year.

Also, IIRC Tim Arvier was a Queensland reporter for ACA around this time as well.
