Nine Network - Programs and Schedules

It has popped up on the overnight schedule occasionally over the years, I guess this is at least a bit of a more consistent slot. A few years back they also used to run Thunderbirds on Saturday early mornings. Probably been 10+ years for that one though.

Yes, that was replayed on Saturday mornings at 6am throughout the 70s/80s/90s and early 00s. Nine seems to have a soft spot for these shows.

Skippy is on 9Gem as well - weekdays at 7.30pm and Sunday mornings. I believe that Nine had rights to the show “in perpetuity”.

How would they have a rights deal like that?

A very old legacy deal.

Yep:

Producer John McCallum first offered the show to Australian Frank Packer, father of Kerry Packer, who bought the show after a brief screening (in fact, one that wasn’t even complete due to projectors breaking down).

He paid a one-off fee for the show in perpetuity.

"…The producers of Skippy took an enormous financial risk to make a TV series on film and in colour – and that risk ended up paying off handsomely. But it wasn’t a certainty, it was a hugely expensive operation which is why they gave endless syndication rights to Nine in a last ditch bid to cover their massive costs.”

…Another was Spyforce (Nine, 1971), a WWII drama starring Jack Thompson, Bill Hunter and Chips Rafferty. Spyforce is now moving to a regional network (Saturday on WIN Peach) because they don’t accept that Nine owns it, despite Nine having had broadcast rights, in perpetuity, since making the show.

That’s why Spyforce (and Skippy) have both been staples on Nine for nearly five decades. No Aussie show has ever been repeated more times on Australian TV than these two. In fact, there has never been a year when Spyforce and Skippy have not been on Nine.

That means the auctions will be held on Saturday, November 4, and broadcast on Nine the following night.

Good luck with back to back ‘Love’ shows Nine.

One for the geriatrics, the other for bimbos and himbos and their wannabes.

Christmas with Delta 2023 now has an airdate: Saturday, December 17. It’s from the following exclusive interview with the singer from Nine’s website this morning.

I don’t get why Nine would have the Australia v New Zealand ICC cricket world cup game across 3 different channels on the east coast of Australia. I could understand 2 channels due to the news, but 3 is ridiculous.

The Pacific championship could just be on Gem. To me it would make more sense

Does that mean you will be tuned in?

Lol no way.

Calm down. I was joking

Surely the content is public domain by now?

Copyright protection is probably over by know, at least according to this:

  • Television and sound broadcasts are protected for 50 years from when they were broadcast.

Skippy ran from 1968 to 1971, So over 50 years both ways.

As for Public Domain, not yet. Works usually enter public domain 70 years after the creator dies. The creator, Lee Robinson died in 2003. so Skippy (and probably the rest of his work) would enter the Public Domain in 2073.

I’m a bit surprised Nine haven’t put the Rugby World Cup Final (NZL vs SAF) on the main channel in Syd/Bris (6am today EDST). It’s on 9Gem.

Nothing gets in the way of three hours of Today every single day.
