I don’t agree, you always think that Newcastle is a dirty word in other regions but Sydney isn’t
When Gav did extensive coverage on the Lismore floods on NBN News and the Today show I didn’t cringe because I was flooded with Lismore content on my TV and I don’t have a connection to Lismore.
Or when the Nine flooded our screens with Bondi Junction content.
If Gav and Tash are someone Lismore watches every night on the News it doesn’t mean they will hate it… They can always tune to 7, Sky or ABC for the same content, NBN offers something different.
That’s because those are news items of national significance.
NBN News airs 2 or 3 Newcastle items to all regions that are of little to no importance to northern viewers. And that happens almost every night. Its no wonder 7 News Local is #1 for news there.
Did the network coverage just continue past 6am, with no TOTH titles into Today, or was there a normal Today opening sequence at 6? If so, it would surely have been better for NBN to fill for a couple of minutes up to the opt-point. I’m not suggesting off topic trailers would be appropriate but they could have allowed for an unconfirmed/flexible finish time by having a longer montage and music at the end which could be joined at any point - and scheduled to end at the opt-back time - 06:00:00 or whatever. As professional as the broadcast may be, it looks completely unprofessional when there’s a clumsy opt into (or out of) a network or sustaining feed , especially with no indication the following broadcast will be joined in progress.
If it was my choice there would have been a local station ID, Today show opener for NBN viewers only Karl and Sarah welcoming Northern NSW viewers (seen in Northern NSW only).
Would be a bit difficult for Karl and Sarah to do an intro since the control room would be in use for the national show (Melbourne Dawn Service), and a pre-recorded intro would be difficult as they don’t know exactly what service their showing, etc.
I don’t think Nine would have an OB Van in Melbourne. The Dawn Service’s are usually pooled, or the ABC does the broadcast and sends a clean feed for others to show. Would be the Sydney control room playing out the incoming feeds of dawn services.
Newcastle would be different though since it’s only NBN that covers it.
That might be the case, but they probably thought since they would be going to the Melbourne service anyway, there wasn’t much point in doing an intro to then go to Melbourne.
That’s all well and good for video, but what about audio? Also it would require routing from the other MEs and reentry to bring program in if you don’t want switch hits when going to the other ME from program. It’s a bit more complicated than you think.
With some knowledge of TV Sales, for the bare minimum it would be a very cheaply made commercial which runs 15 secs maybe for a 4 week campaign. Just graphics, logos and no location shooting and probably on a ROS (Run of station) schedule with most of your ads running across the multi-channels and some on the main channel. Advertiser doesn’t get to pick what shows they want to be in.
With Nine recently confirming their 2025 Upfronts event for 24th October 2024, we might just end up getting new 9NBN Northern NSW streams on 9Now for Coffs Harbour, Tamworth, and Central Coast (if they don’t already get the Newcastle feed on 9Now, i.e). Let’s just wait and see how this plays out.
UPDATE: Nine kept their Upfronts to just new releases, new tools for advertisers, and the addition of new BBC FAST channels, so that we can all shut up about new NBN Northern NSW and 9 Darwin streams for another year.
That’s because you’re trying to watch the bulletins on-demand. Unfortunately they only upload the nightly bulletins for the capital cities, and only the capital cities. Not even worth having a dedicated NBN News category if they’re not going to upload the nightly bulletins to 9Now.
All that exists in that category is a 9Now Start Over ad featuring 9News Sydney presenter Peter Overton. To watch NBN News, you’ll need to have the NBN Newcastle stream up and running at 6pm nightly.
