Big Ideas season has begun

It is the country’s premier annual event focusing on big ideas, exclusive research pieces and blue sky thinking – and in 2025, Powered’s Big Ideas event series is back with a twist.

Now in its seventh year, Big Ideas Delivered is the next iteration of The Big Ideas Store, and has evolved over the years from a small pop up store in Sydney to a virtual event, and then a week-long event in Sydney to now being a roadshow of in-person events in the offices of some of the biggest media agencies in Australia.

Big Ideas Delivered will cover some of the most pressing topics facing advertisers today, including a deep dive into the country’s housing crisis with a fascinating insight into the evolution of how young Australians are getting onto the property ladder and what that means for brands. The research explores the societal and cultural impact of the compromise Australians are making.

There is also new research and a playbook for clients on how the demographic of people aged over 50 is overlooked and undervalued by brands despite their huge spending power and the greatest generational wealth transfer in human history currently underway to them. The research also challenges the industry about how they represent this audience and our role in media to change society’s perception of ageing.

There will also be research and insights into consumer trends and expectations around sustainability in a cost of living crisis and consumer appetite for change; and how Artificial Intelligence, personalisation and augmented reality is driving trends in the global retail sector.

“These insights and panels empower our agency partners to better inform brands about our constantly evolving world and culture” says Day “Big ideas are in Powered’s DNA, and through this forward-thinking research, we’re committed to deeply understanding what drives Australians across all demographics and categories, ensuring greater impact, connection, and campaign effectiveness for our partners”

The events come as Powered bolsters its ranks with the appointments of Remi Baker as Director of Insights and Innovation, and Stewart Gurney as Director of Strategy and Effectiveness.

Both known for their media agency experience, Remi was most recently Sydney Head of Strategy at PHD where she chaired the PHD Innovation Council which contributed to PHD Australia being awarded No.1 for Best Innovation Program and No.1 Most Innovative Media & Marketing Company in the AFR’s Most Innovative awards.

She has been recognised as a Cannes Young Lions winner, Microsoft Innovation award winner and Festival of Media APAC Next Generation Winner. In her role as Director of Insights and Innovation, she will uncover market-leading insights on consumer trends and cultural shifts to enable brands and clients to reach their audiences in more creative and innovative ways.

Stewart has spent more than 20 years immersed in the world of media agencies, most recently as Chief Strategy Officer at Kaimera. In a storied career that has taken him from the UK to Australia, he was previously PHD’s Chief Strategy Officer Australia and has worked at MediaCom and Vizeum.

Having spent years understanding client needs and crafting strategies, he has a strong grasp of the challenges CMOs and brands face, and how publishers can address their evolving priorities. As Director of Strategy and Effectiveness, he will ensure that Powered delivers results for partners.

Director of Powered, Lisa Day, said: “I am thrilled to have Remi and Stewart on-board at Powered. With both having such a rich history of media agency experience, their know-how and passion is priceless and will ensure Powered continues to deliver effective results and big ideas for clients and agency partners.”

I’ve got a few…

  • Tell your radio presenters to stop promoting the opposition newspaper
  • Get with of MAFS
  • Reinstate Nine News Darwin
  • Just merge with WIN already?
  • Add the Crawfords back catalogue to Stan?

Why? Nine have shown their commitment to the NT by having a journalist film packages on her iPhone and post it online!

The advertising revenue spent on their QLD news relay supports this top tier news service.

With WIN offloading NRN to Paramount, it’s more likely that WIN’s news output will be rebranded under the Nine News branding. We could even see a revival of a concept similar to the Nine News Tasmania production concept once Gordon/WIN secures the increased stake.

Wishful thinking.

Unlikely, WIN News is a product that Nine doesn’t control.

It’s a similar situation to when Southern Cross News wanted to rebrand itself as 7News but had to settle for Nightly News.

A 20-year Nine news veteran is said to be the latest to hire a top workplace lawyer to go after Nine news over her dismissal from the company.

Former Nine producer Stephanie Angus left Nine in December 2023 after a decade at A Current Affair as a senior producer and back-to-back stints working on programs Mornings and Kerri-Anne.

Angus’s complaint is said to relate to bullying by a senior news executive.

Del Fordham moves from Nine to Audible

Del Fordham has been poached from Nine by Audible, where he will be the associate director of Audible Originals for the APAC region.

Fordham spent 18 months at Nine Entertainment, where he was most recently head of podcasts. Prior to this, he was Nine’s content director, and spent four years as News Corp Australia’s head of audio.

Fordham tells Mumbrella his final day at Nine was Friday, and he starts at Amazon this morning (Monday March 17).

Fordham enjoyed a strong final week at Nine, launching lifestyle podcast The Pay Off with Sylvia Jeffreys.

I wondered if Del Fordham was somehow related to Bed Fordham (they’re not) but turns out Del’s wife is former Content Director Gemma Fordham for SCA’s Hit Network.

Nine announces strategic restructure and leadership appointments to drive digital growth

As part of its ongoing commitment to delivering world-class technology and product solutions, Nine has announced a significant restructuring of its Data, Product, and Technology functions. To drive innovation and create greater impact, two key divisions have been created: Consumer and Enterprise.

The Consumer Division will focus on delivering world-class products across Streaming and Publishing, while the Enterprise Division will focus on data leadership and developing solutions to support Nine’s broader business goals.

In line with this new structure, Nine is pleased to announce the appointment of two key leaders to newly created roles. Lewis Evans has been named Chief Product and Technology Officer, Consumer. Evans, currently Director of Product, Streaming, brings extensive experience leading 9Now through major consumer events such the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. His leadership and innovative mindset will play a pivotal role in advancing Nine’s Streaming and Publishing capabilities.

Nine’s current Chief Data Officer, Suzie Cardwell has been appointed to the expanded role of Chief Data, Product, and Technology Officer, Enterprise. Cardwell has been instrumental in driving cutting-edge data solutions and will continue to lead the charge in developing technology that powers Nine’s commercial, cloud, and advertising platforms.

Nine’s Chief Digital Officer, Alex Parsons said, “This restructure marks a key moment in Nine’s digital transformation. By strategically aligning our teams to dedicated Consumer and Enterprise divisions, we’re ensuring that we solidify our leadership in the digital space – delivering exceptional experiences for our customers, while building and strengthening the robust technology and data infrastructure that drives our business forward.”

“I’m incredibly excited for Lewis and Suzie as they step into their new roles. Both are incredibly talented leaders with a track record of success. Lewis has been a driving force behind 9Now’s growth, and Suzie’s leadership in data and technology has been integral to our digital strategy. I’m confident they will lead their teams to even greater achievements in these key areas.”

The structural changes within Nine’s digital function, which take effect immediately, will support the ongoing transformation and the continued delivery of exceptional technology experiences.

UPDATE 27/3:

The cash offer is now $4.43 per Domain share, up 5.5% from the original $4.20, valuing the company at more than $2.8 billion.

The offer represents a 42% premium to the closing share price of Domain on February 20, the last trading day before CoStar’s original proposal.

Nine calculates that it would receive about $1.4 billion, net of capital gains tax, from the improved deal.

CoStar says its $4.43 per share is its best and final offer in the absence of a competing proposal.

UPDATE 2 31/3

Real Emergency will launch on streaming service 9Now in Australia in Q2 and will be distributed to major FAST platforms worldwide. Meanwhile, WTFN digital distribution arm Radar, will roll out Real Emergency VOD channels across YouTube, Facebook and other social video platforms.
