Sam Ackerman filling in for Nicky Styris for sport on Newshub Live at 6pm this evening (21/7/2017). There’s not a lot of sport fill-ins left now, only Sam and Ross Karl that I can think of.

And Sam is MediaWorks head of sport! The boss reading the news! With Jeff and Shaun gone, you’d suspect they need to train some new readers soon.

WTF is that new promo for Newshub???

The one with the random people???

IMO, it’s sh!t

This one? https://youtu.be/xx8AL03aWSo

I actually quite like it. Beats the dime a dozen action shots bullshit everywhere else (NZ and Australia). Newshub is coming from a challenging position in the market where they get whipped nightly in total people numbers. They have to be different and that means advertising different. The guy on the ad might be a bit daggy but he’s relatable.

The other thing which is important to mention is that Newshub lost a lot of respect publicly when they lost a lot of high profile talent over a period of 18 months under a controversial CEO. They are still rebuilding that and an ad like this also helps.

Newshub/3 News has always gone slightly away from traditional in their advertising.

See the ad with backing music by The Veils in the late 2000s. https://youtu.be/ArAZniIeo4M

Or this similar one https://youtu.be/dRVoQ6UrjLw

The great comparison ads in 2011 comparing what was on TV1 to them as well:https://youtu.be/elXM1XR3Hgs

Also really like this promo from 2008: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM3CiSW_yho

I agree - it’s a great promo. But it’s a little misleading. The audience numbers - 3 million Kiwis and counting - is actually mostly made up of Mediaworks’ radio audience stats (those listening to Newshub bulletins across Mediaworks’ Music Networks)… NOT its TV or digital audience. This promo confuses the viewer into thinking 3 million Kiwis are WATCHING Newshub Live when, in fact, that is inaccurate and they are taking the Mediaworks RADIO stats without any mention of the radio bulletins.

Yep, very good point. I have a major issue with that part of it.

Also, I don’t even think that many Kiwi’s watch news anyway, 75% of the pop, yeah right.

So, then 20% watch 1 News and the other 5 watch PRIME…

Hahhaha, you’ve got to be kidding me.

Oh, Four Million(ish) people in NZ, Newshub are saying that 75% of the NZ Pop watch Newshub, and im saying year right.

Sigh. @media addressed this up the page. They aren’t saying 75% watch Newshub’s TV bulletin. They are saying more New Zealanders get their news from Newshub. That combines their TV news products with online news products (website, app) as well as Radio Live. Where they’ve been cheeky is adding in their music stations like The Edge, Mai FM, More, The Breeze etc. That is where they get their 3 million figure from. It’s a ludicrous way to do it, but it’s not just TV audiences.

Yes I get that, but to the average viewer it would be “Oh wow they get a lot of people watching the news”.

It’s definitely stretching the truth. Or outright lying.

Gemma Coombe filled in for Susie on the 4 o’clock news today.
