Yeah but, it’s not Prime any more. They’re not trying to compete with TV1 & TV3 any more. They’ve shuffled it way down the channel order and are now using it to promote their pay-walled offer on the mothership (Sky TV). Are they really that interested in news? Look how much they’ve scaled back The Crowd Goes Wild in recent years. I doubt they’ll carry a national news bulletin when NewsHub goes. Perhaps, maybe, they’ll put a short Sky News Australia bulletin in there, at 6pm, but I doubt that would satisfy anyone.
Yeah they’re not allowed to broadcast news on Sunday mornings
You can broadcast news at anytime. You are not allowed to broadcast commercials on a Sunday morning. Also Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day are totally commercial free.
he’s almost 60, probably more likely to retire than uproot his life for a fresh start in Doha.
@NuStraya @OnAir @theGradyConnell I am deeply concerned about the entire staff at Newshub as almost 300 of whom are facing job losses. During my trip to Auckland nearly three years ago, I had the opportunity to visit Newshub and was impressed by the hard work and dedication of these people - many of them seasoned journalists and camera crews.
Proposal for a agency-style organisation was rejected…
so sorta like ITN but without any competition?
I guess?
I would assume more like a wires/affiliate service, so TVNZ/Three/RNZ would all have access to the same package produced by the agency but would intro it “Josephine Bloggs from NZNewsAgency reports”
Newshub have confirmed the story’s accuracy in the updated article.
He [Kyne] confirmed the agency would act like the former NZPA - “a shared news gathering service formed out of the TVNZ and Newshub newsrooms, supported by RNZ, that would then create and license content back under agreed independent editorial guidelines”.
It seems that Newshub trying to collaborate with state owners TVNZ and RNZ has failed.
TVNZ’s board rejecting it outright after not even a second decision is quite rude imo. It’s like they want to be the only game in town.
Actually a good idea… Something that could have benefited all companies who would want to be part of it…
Would you not want the same if you were TVNZ? Total monopoly of the market.
Typical arrogance from TVNZ management.
I doubt they knew about the full gravity of the situation at Newshub when they were discussing it, but that makes it worse for me.
These guys have exhibited a “fuck the rest, we know best” attitude for a long time. But TVNZ’s moat is only so big - they’ll eventually be in the same position as Newshub in a few years time.
Pooling resources with a competitor when it’s obvious both of you cannot sustain the current levels of your existing operations can be an easy win in business.
TVNZ has pushed back a little in a statement themselves but feels like they could have done more.
Its easy to say that TVNZ should come to the party and help, but it’s not TVNZ’s problem to solve. Its not unreasonable for TVNZ to put their own situation ahead of helping others
VERY intriguing quotes from Sky here:
Sky TV: the most tantalising question of all: what will Sky make of all this? It has just announced some strong advertising figures, and is putting a bunch of sport onto its rebranded Sky Open channel. Newshub won’t be making its 5.30pm news product any more, and while The Spinoff understands it has previously explored moving its news production contract to TVNZ, it’s clearly leaving its options open. Is there a play to use a news product to take over Three’s position in our minds and living rooms? There is. A spokesperson for Sky supplied a statement expressing sincere sorrow about events at WBD. Intriguingly, it goes on to leave the door well open to maintaining or even expanding its role in the local news ecosystem. “We know the importance of news to our customers and the importance of plurality of news in New Zealand generally, and as a New Zealand broadcaster we are keen to explore how we might continue to play our part in delivering strong local news.”
Nice timeline here from Paula Penfold:
This is what happened on Newshub’s worst day:
