It’s a bout 4/5 average overheads.
Miller’s opinion piece was published in the AFR, as well as The Australian and News Corp’s metropolitan papers.
Absolutely no excuse for 10 not to have locally hosted news bulletins in the five metro markets, seven nights a week.
Unless it’s too costly to support. Ratings and advertising keep dropping.
Hasn’t this dinosaur already announced his departure from Seven? Not before time yet fellow dinosaurs at Seven would disagree. Typical departure missive from a person when ego exceeds aptitude.
Tonight’s Media Watch on the ABC had a report on Meta’s decision not to renew its deals with Australian media organisations.
The rhetoric they are using just amuses me. Traditional media have not kept up with what in particular younger people want from news and suffered as a result. I think they had no intention of renewing the deals. The legislation was ridiculous to begin with.
If news outlets were operated correctly, they could easily do without Facebook. Alas, lazy decisions and a lack of investment by the sector has them as reliant on social media as an addict is for drugs.
Appearing at a parliamentary inquiry into social media, the three companies warned of job cuts across newsrooms if Facebook and Instagram’s parent Meta fails to renew the deals struck with publishers under the media bargaining code.
Any excuse will do with those dinosaur shonks.
They blamed closure of local news bulletins regionally on converting to digital, now production with digital technology has never been cheaper or faster.
Now they blame meta. It’s always everyone else’s fault and never theirs.
Take responsibility.
Local representatives from Meta, Snap, TikTok and Google appeared before a parliamentary inquiry into the influence of social media this morning.
Unless they increased their headcount when the Meta deal was inked, they are just looking for another excuse to justify cutting staff.
Of late we have had: a special remote control with 7+,
9Now ,iView and 10Play just for Australia, no changes to the syphoning list and turning off Mildura 10.
Now it’s we are broke so everyone has to get fired because we didn’t get what we wanted.
Bet they are all heading down to Canberra on QantasLink every few days to lobby a pollie.
Once that worked because the pollies were scared of the journo’s destroying their re-election chances, but it doesn’t work anymore - most of the journo’s have been sacked.
On this one:
The global streamers are in an advantageous position to get buttons and apps in a prime placement
I have no problem with letting Australian streamers given the same buttons and apps they they can’t negotiate because they’re not global
Not necessarily, as the extra income may have reduced headcount reductions that may have occurred a few years earlier instead of now.
Exactly this.
It pisses me off that Meta paid any of them anything. Meta needs news, and the news media needs Meta. No money should have ever changed hands.
Old media got a free ride but the gravy train is now over and it may bite them further in the ass if Meta follows through to ban news, again. If they do go down that path again then this time they need to stick to it instead of caving like last time.
In Seven’s case I don’t understand why they aren’t charging for 7+. They have the content to make some decent money off subscriptions. Hell even if they stream SD for free with ads and charge for HD they would still make good money.
The lot of them need to stop begging for handouts and innovate themselves. There is money to be made, they are choosing not to get it. The days of being able to rely on advertising are long gone.
