News Breakfast

Not at this stage, but I’m sure the next Breakfast set ( in the coming year or two) will incorporate the new studio better. It all comes down to funding. They do have a lot more space now to play around with, which will help grow ABC News Breakfast.

I would like to see Weekend Breakfast more to these studios (one day) to better complement the Weekday version.

Sooooo $85m was spent to what “play around with space” that the viewer may notice 3 years from now?

Imagine if Seven spent $85 million on a new TV studio and not a cent on upgrading the set for a better viewer experience.

Only ABC and government money works like that!

The whole complex has undergone redevelopment, not just one studio.

I realize that, but $85m (actually $90m I just googled it) is a shit tonne of money to spend on new offices and studios when the net result to the viewer is absolutely nothing. How can that be justified?

Ripponlea (TV production) will close down and move to Southbank. I’m not sure I understand why the set of a daily news programme which was updated a couple of years back must be updated again. Surely saving money where they can and putting into providing content rather than updating sets to satisfy Media Spy forum users is more than justifiable.

If you really want an answer, write to your local MP and ask for the matter to be raised in parliament.

Yes, I completely agree.

I love a good relaunch as much as the next Media Spy member, but is it really worth replacing a set that was introduced only relatively recently? As long as the set is still fit for it’s purpose and that the ABC is spending money on the content (I’ll say it again, the most important thing about ABC News Breakfast is the ABC News part!) there’s not really much to complain about.

Yeah, so if they’re spending so much they might not have enough money for unnecessary upgrades.

I guess agree to disagree. It’s not so much I am into meaningless set changes for mediaspy. I’m just saying - $90 million is an AWFUL lot of money to spend on new premises and studios that are larger - and not spend any money on even updating or adding some new elements or improvements to the set that could actually improve the show for the viewer.

An amazing US style set for news can cost $1m. A brand new ground up new 9 News style set in Australia would
Cost around 250-350k. So for $150k (out of $90 million) ABC could have Made some functional and design cosmetic updates to to set - that could
Improve the show. A new desk, some new lighting. Replace the cheap looking printed graphic panel walls of clouds with some video elements. Some vertical plasma areas to display info. A social media wall or nook as ABC is so desperately trying to work out how to get younger people to watch. Some digital presentation improvements and technologies on the set to tie Guthries huge digital content push into the finished product on air. These types
Of things. They could have done meaningful and useful updates to the set for $100k - $200k (of $90 million)

After all this set is used over 20
Hours a week on the air for 4 hour broadcasts.

And now we are hearing it’s not HD? Again - if you are spending $90m - and literally outfitting new studios and control rooms - and you just launched ABC HD - why on earth would
You not ass HD cameras and wiring and make this HD ready? In 2017

What exactly is the point of spending tens of millions and having a "much much much larger "
Studio as the hosts keep saying - to put the same physical set in - and in SD. Just to have more empty space to move the cameras in? At a time when news studios have gotten much smaller in Australia - but sets more impressive. aBC has given us a much larger more expensive studio - with the same set in SD.

And you say the money should be spent in improvements in content - but it hasn’t - they’ve spent it on studios and physical space. And for what exactly? I don’t follow. Why update to a larger studio with old technology and not update the viewer experience.

I wish Nate would #putajacketon.

Was there really nowhere else they could have put the plasma wall? And if it is going to be featured in wide shots then at least put something up on it rather than leaving it black.

It looks like the plasma is right in front of the main presenting desk. Looks awkward to me.

So with this massive new studio - they still can’t lay out the set correctly or turn on the TVs. Go ABC!

Can’t comment about the content, but still looks like the same old cheap News Breakfast. Disappointing

Truly horrible. Beige couch, cream centre table, brown wood grain floor, brown side panels, a cream plastic desk with blue down lights all in front of a pinkish sunrise for a background.

And a massive look-in window opening to… The construction site at the ABC… :expressionless: :construction::construction:

It’s as though there’s no room at all: looks like the couch is right up against the rear wall of the set. Too crammed! A better design would’ve made the set feel much larger.

Content is still terrible. These people have no idea how to produce TV.

The other morning they opened with a 5 minute filed report on the Byron Bay Mum arrested in Bali. It felt like it had been produced the day before, and the pace felt more suited to Australian Story or 7.30. It was long, dragged out and required your FULL attention on the TV to understand the story. Who has that time at 6am? Breakfast TV needs to be produced in a different manner to in depth magazine style or long form report. The filed report felt at least 12 hours old as the hosts had to give the updated info before the taped piece played. This is where a LIVE cross where the hosts can ask questions and interview a reporter and get the latest info in a faster pace suited to mornings is needed.

At about 6.07 they moved to the new weather guy. But not to say a quick hello and get to the massive storms hitting NSW that will impact people’s day. Oh no, they chatted to nate for about 5 minutes about his life, his hobbies, his time in the Naby and so forth. So 11 minutes in we have seen one story - that was taped yesterday.

When he finally got to the weather - rather than explaining the storm how it is happening when it will hit and the weather patterns behind it )this guy was sold to us a a science guy and true meteorologist) he just read out the highs and lows for 10 cities off a map. That was it.

USELESS.
