Newcastle Radio

Their approach to digging the ‘bozos’ across town in their promotional run for NEWFM really does give off ‘Napoleon Dynamite challenging Mike Tyson to a fight and then also saying he’s already wiped the floor with him’. Embarrassing and baseless. The stats are there, we know who is and isn’t listening to who. What’s that thing they say, point a finger and that’s two back at yourself? Laughable, and completely bunkers whilst at the same time not shocking for NEWFM.

The solution is cheap & simple!!

  1. Keep the network feed separate (which they are doing anyway) so nothing needs to change here.

  2. Switch NewFM’s local logs to take the same playlist as sister station B-Rock.

Focus solely on pure rock (Newcastle’s Best Rock) and forget all about bragging about talent.

Let the rock/music do the talking.

Yes they need to either go rock or hot ac. Just pick a lane and focus on the music.

NewFM need to stop being “the wedge” between Hit and Triple M.

The problem with focusing on pure rock, is they need to have the talent who can bring that format to life.

At the moment the jocks they have don’t connect with the music, it is imperative that they can do the music justice, rather than a forward/back announce.

It will never be as simple as a format change for these guys, they basically need to start from scratch with an actual budget to even have a chance at competing.

Yes I tend to agree. That’s what Rebel FM does well - their announcers really connect with the rock.

What a spectacle last night at Charlestown Square for Jess’ gender reveal. The hype was real, people were really engaged with the moment, a master stroke by the promo team at HIT. The way it played out on air was fantastic.

This is how you take what’s going on in your life and bringing in the whole community. Can’t wait to see the video.

New FM really needs to stream to increase their ratings. Like if people could stream it, it may encourage them to continue listening in the car.

2NUR had their streaming stats exposed to the public internet for a while (if you knew how to find it) and they have a pretty decent number of people streaming

I could imagine New FM is more mainstream so could have even more streaming

I wonder what would happen if I asked a smart speaker to stream New FM?

I suspect it would say “NEW FM is not available for streaming. Why would you want to do that for in any case?”.

If I’m a uno student - or anyone really - without a car - how do I listen to New FM at home, work, gym or anywhere really?

You don’t… and from my perspective, this is the biggest problem with NEWFM launching streaming;

Brand association…

I have not recently met on person that says that their favorite radio station is NEWFM. Even if NEWFM decide to stream (and they will not, they are tightarses)… they have such poor brand association that I really doubt many would be in their back yard having a bbq and think ‘Geeze, lets chuck on Newfm… hey Alexa/siri, whack on 105.3 NEWFM…’… and why would they when you have networks like hit or triple m, or damn… Spotify or Apple Music. NEWFM really gives nothing to be craved by the audience. Their programming has become a joke… forget Amy Schumer’s Netflix comedy special, just take a few lawn chairs down to Sandgate and watch the show.

Newcastle’s Best Rock was early 2000s I think.

The Original / Better Music And More Of It was early 90s and their heyday.

It was a really good station then. It sounded like an Austereo station with the same imagery, and a music format between Triple M and 2day fm.

It was helped be 2NX and 2KO not having converted to fm.

Now the station doesn’t stand for anything it is just a wishy washy cross between Triple M and Hit. Relaunch it with a music format similar Triple M Perth.
New Fm Newcastle, Newcastle’s new Alternative, or Music that Rocks!!!

That’s your opinion! I think it’s fantastic! It actually reminds me of early Nova, when it was a commercialised version of Triple J.

Damn so they are choosing to halve their aud.

Odd

I mean, they’re choosing to run a station into the ground. A non functional breakfast show, community level announcers. NEWFM was once, and only recently, going well in terms of talent line up… management choose not to invest in replacing the good talent that has left. Everything they do is a choice. It’s like a fat person complaining about their size yet actively choosing not to eat healthy or go the the gym. It’s choosing to not do anything about it…

I heard a bit of a competition announcement that NEW FM were running this morning which had a cheeky dig at Triple M and Hit…

The DJ said something like “you’re not competing against the whole country for this one”.

One great thing about NEWFM’s competitions is that even if you were to be competing against the entire country you would still be in with a good shot. What’re they giving away that anyone is flocking to the phones for? You’ll never find a million dollar dig on NEWFM…. Maybe a 20 dollar voucher to wests and a free side of food poisoning.

I think NEWFM need to stop the sledging until they have something worthy to sledge about. I’ve never in my life seen someone pull up in their 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage and try and tell the guy in the Ferrari that they’ll beat them in a race or that their car is hands down better… yet NEWM seem to be that guy. Cheap shots at the giant, ij a battle that’s absolutely not David and Goliath.
