Newcastle Radio

You’re… addressing the two stations that stream & podcast with the press of a button in a forum about… a market with those two stations and… one that doesn’t stream? Weird post

This is what comes up when you open the app, I get ads from Tasmania.

It should detect my location and play local radio.

This page shows a Central Coast station only??

Very poorly designed.

And put up with a pre roll ad before the actual stream starts.
And then the audio is choppy.

And some icons point to the wrong station - “Hit Maranoa” gives me the same stream as “Hit Darling Downs”.

I emailed SCA about that 3 months ago, they said it would be fixed and it’s still not fixed.

I am going to give my (probably unpopular) opinion. I honestly don’t think the element of local is as important to most listeners as it is to radio veterans. I agree, that a bit of local is good, but moving with the times of Spotify, AppleMusic, and podcasting… I actually don’t care about what local potholes people hate the most. I don’t want to sit through personalities trying to be HYPER LOCAL (OMG I WENT DOWN TO THE OCEAN BATHS, THEN I WENT FOR A BEER AT THE BREWERY, AND THEN BECAUSE I AM SO LOCAL I LICKED THE FLOOR OF THE ARGYLE HOUSE THAT USED TO BE CALLED FANNYS AND I KNOW THAT BECAUSE I AM SO LOCAL). Maybe it’s just me, but give me a minute of local news (and make it good), and focus on entertaining me with good content and good playlists. It’s also something to criticize the hit network but then look at something like NEWFM who are SO SO LOCAL WE HAVE THE NOVOS and they rate lower than the ground I am standing on.

The most reasonable & realistic take on this entire website

I think music still plays a massive roll in radio, if that is not spot on everything else will fail

I completely agree with this & all above posts.

Whilst NewFM being “As Local As” might seem like a strong attack on SCA, the fact is, it must be quality local programming & local talent.

NewFM may have the correct tagline… But without smart music scheduling & smart programming strategies, it will all continue to (literally) fall on deaf ears.

If NewFM want to truly be “As Local As”, they would truly listen to the Newcastle market and what flavours of music they prefer.

Heck - community stations are “As Local As” 24/7… yet the larger “networked” stations always attract a larger audience.

I think the secret is PROGRAMMING, whilst retaining a certain aspect of hyper-localism.

Losing the branding of a local station is one thing… but connecting with a local audience is what will always win.

I agree. I think this is currently the biggest problem with commercial radio in this country.

Paul Rothapfel on Newy 87.8 FM had his last day on air today.

From Monday he will work at the Sandgate 2HD/NewFM studios to present a networked arvo show which will air on many of Bill Caralis’s stations around the country. He won’t be heard in Newcastle but he will be on stations as far as North QLD.

Is that for the AM or FM network stations?

Also looks like there’s a new Fresh Nights announcer moving from Max Taree.

Does this mean Pete Davis will be network only & 2HD will have its own local 12-4pm weekday show?

2HD already has a local 3-4pm hour each weekday.

Newy 87.8 lost another DJ, Matt Morris who is moving to New FM to do DJ, panelling and admin work.

What on-air shift will he do?

Actually looks like he is currently on the network New FM runs, he is on a show called “Fresh Nights” which goes around the country, but not on New FM… he was also on the same network after 1pm for about 2 weeks
