New Zealand TV

They had Sport 365 as a news product around 2003 which was a half hour news show (like SSN was), but yep that became an update service then rather quickly.

I think if they had a service established around the turn of the century and stuck with it, it could have done really well. Perhaps expanded out by selling news bulletins to radio stations, maybe a strong online presence to rival the Stuff and NZH sport sections? I guess the ship has sailed.

The rumour mill says MediaWorks has been in serious talks with Discovery, the US-listed pay TV network. It is possible that Discovery is looking to separate from Sky TV and set up its own operation here. Included in its stable of reality shows are titles like Deadliest Catch and Naked and Afraid . Sources close to MediaWorks say the potential buyer wants to retain Newshub – the news operation that spans TV, radio and online.

Very interesting development. Discovery do have a strong presence via pay TV, at least 6-7channels. Not sure what be benefits a local operation would bring to those channels though considering it’s pretty much all imported and growth on pay tv would be limited now.

Hopefully this is a sale that does happen though as there are worse owners out there. The focus of the cuts this time round indicate something is definitely happening.

Is it ironic MediaWorks announces 130 job losses and then this evening this has happened.
Guess the poor Engineer must have been given the arse
Quick bring him back so I can get my music back :joy:

PS. also for those interested and what I found interesting is that the ThreeNow App stream is 10 seconds AHEAD of the The Edge TV Auckland Free to Air transmission

Sky Sport will axe jobs in a significant restructure as the media industry continues to suffer in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis.

Just give the show to Carly already. She did a great job during the lockdown keeping it going from her home

Survive the '80s is a fun little show. Wouldn’t mind seeing an Australian network attempt a local adaptation.

I didn’t even know Carly was a permanent host. Since when?

And what about Mel Homer, who currently co-hosts The Café?

4-part travel series Rhys Darby: Big in Japan premieres on TVNZ1 this Thursday night, and should be on 10 in Australia later.

Looks like someone rushed this ident on The Edge TV

Yikes.

This looks suspiciously similar to James May’s recent series for Amazon

According to Wikipedia, James’ show had been pitched to the BBC years earlier but they knocked it back and then subsequently picked up by Amazon it seems.

I’d say both, and possibly others, were commissioned and potentially partially funded by Japan tourism bodies to promote the country ahead of the Olympics we’ll before covid-19 and their obvious postponement.

It does seem like there are similarities between the two, but it’s not uncommon for travel shows to lean towards the comedic / quirky side of Japan when presenting about the country for obvious reasons.
