New Zealand TV

It’s for historic reasons. When TV first launched in NZ, it was non-commercial for about the first month. Then they allowed ad’s to help pay for the service on certain nights a week. It’s because NZ isn’t big enough to support non-commercial TV without massive broadcasting fees or taxes &c.

Over time the ratio of non-commercial and commercial airtime has changed until the current six hours on a Sunday as already mentioned. This was implemented in the late 80’s when the NZ ON Air funding model began, and despite the odd complaint from TV3, hasn’t changed.

Here’s a table…

Outdated reasons yes but I don’t think the programming would improve significantly if they were opened up to advertising on Sunday. Lets look at the listings for Saturday at the moment - TVNZ1 have infomercials from 7:30-9:00am and Three have infomercials and paid programming from just after midnight until 9:30am.

Plus it gives TVNZ the opportunity to play some of their public service programming and a little bit more of it because there are no adds to programme around.

They were awful weren’t they!!! If only Sunrise held on a bit longer it might have had a bit more of a chance. I think if they paired Petra with someone else it could have worked but Corin Dann wasn’t suited to the format.

Agreed, everyone went on about Petra but it was Corin who was totally unsuited to Breakfast. I think Rawdon & Petra could have been as successful as the Rawdon & Toni pairing.

You can have infomercials but not commercials? Makes sense.

Agreed. I think it was only a few months later after Sunrise got axed that Paul and Pippa both left.

Sunrise was actually good with Oliver Driver and Carly, just needed a few more tweaks and it would have been even better. It really found its niche there for a while, even the weird stuff like Oliver’s dog being on the set worked.

For sure. Petra has done Ice TV and the like before so knew how to do live, unscripted TV. But she wasn’t a particularly strong interviewer. Corin was a good interviewer but didn’t have the other skills. It’s quite funny because now I quite enjoy him on Morning Report - a show much better suited to his talents.

No, that’s not right. I think something’s screwing the the timeszones. There are no infomercials 6am-12pm Sundays, likewise TVSN can’t sell their wares either.

A long block of non-stop, uhh, television. Sounds kinda nice actually. The reasoning might be outdated, though.

I imagine it would be lowest rating part of the week anyway.

Yeah you definitely can’t have informercials from 6-midday.

As you can see, a lot of paid religious broadcasts and other niche/cultural content.

Sorry guys for the confusion I was using Saturday specifically as an example of why having Sunday commercials wouldn’t improve the programming they already provide when the Saturday morning lineups are pretty poor offerings already.

From my point of view, almost all religious programmes on television are paid for and classified as infomercials, despite being shown on Sundays (and Anzac Day) between 6am-12pm and all day Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

That’s right, Threes former Sunday morning show Three60 was sponsored by Massey University using this method to get around the advert ban.

Was there anything significant in the budget for broadcasting? Any new non commercial channel or TVNZ 7/RNZ+ reboot (wishful thinking)?

NZ on Air funding increase, apparently.

I think funding for any new linear TV Channel would be a waste of time, personally. and I don’t think funding a new TV channel would be a popular use of taxpayer money right this second!

That’s good news there is an increase. I found this on RNZ https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/mediawatch/audio/2018746497/no-relief-for-under-pressure-commercial-media-in-budget

Fair enough, I was wishfuling hoping there would be money for a news/information channel like ABC News in Australia. I’ve loved watching their channel on YouTube and all the pressers that are covered LIVE.

I’ve been watching a bit of that too recently.

I think the ship has ultimately sailed on the concept of a NZ news/information channel. TVNZ7 got halfway there but never had the funding required to make it truly great.

I find I need a break from the BBC and Aljazeera and yearn for a local channel but the ABC is the closest thing here. I see RNZ covers alot of pressers LIVE on YouTube, wonder if they could air them LIVE on their Freeview channel as well and whack a news ticker.

Yeah you are right the ship has sailed with that, the one thing I’m hoping for is TVNZ or RNZ launch a news streaming channel like America’s CBSN or ABC News Live would be a nice add on for there ondemand platform.

Just out of curiosity, you get BBC CNN etc… but would there be any interest in the ABC News Channel being delivered on a local platform in NZ?

I think there’d some some small interest on a similar level to Al Jazeera English perhaps, if it were to be carried on Sky.

It’s already available on the international ABC app, which is good.

I think there would be interest in NZ for the ABC News Channel especially with expat Aussies plus our Freeview platform sucks but I doubt the ABC would join our Freeview platform as it is expensive to join, they’d be more suited to being on Sky. But I’m happy its freely available on the app and YouTube.
