I look forward to watching Three News at 6pm on SkyOpen View 1, or the later simulacast at 8pm on SkyOpen View 2. /s
Sky do own the rights to Big Bang and Friends via Neon, so Heres hoping they put friends or big bang on before the 6pm news to help drive the ratings for that show first.
Overall though it seems like a really good move for three and Sky and will be interesting what changes come about
Doubtful they will expand News content. This is just further affirmation that FTA is on a downward death spiral. Wonât be long until NZ goes back to a TVNZ monopoly at this rate. The only content that works still for FTA is live sport, news and shiny floor shows, nothing else anymore. With less players in the FTA market, sports bodies wonât get traction for high rights payments anymore, leaving the door open for international streaming giants to gobble up sports rights thereby locking out TVNZ and SKY long-term. When that occurs, there will be nothing left to keep FTA viable anymore, fade to black sadly.
Cant see them expanding the news content either, especially given for years how small prime news at 5.30pm was. Given that Stuff has essentially provided a cheaper alternative similar to what three did with prime news, i can only see this remaining as is for now
What will happen to Sky Open Now? Convert it into a All Kiwi Music Channel?
I wouldnât have thought so.
Probably the exact same. Just use it as a multi channel or like TV2.
Very volatile media market in NZ. Two foreign companies selling NZ assets for just $1. (Nine and Stuff (2020), WBD and Three)
I expect eventually we might see some rationalisation of channels - a merged Sky Open and Three and their programming catalogues is stronger than them both separately.
Now how long the lights remain on in linear remains to be seen but a stronger combined channel is surely a better prospect than two middling channels.
I mean, Sky Open are stripping Suddenly Susan at 5:30 from next week. What decade are we in
Had a strong feeling this was the only option for a future for Three.
I could see them merging their content offering and get Sky Open as a FTA Sport Preview channel. Sport is probably the biggest draw even delayed coverage. âSky Sport Open?â
I think theyâd fold Eden into Sky Open first, bulk Rush up a bit with the more adventurous programming from SO. Can see sports going more toward +HR=E, at least the more popular codes. Eden & Eden +1 would save them leasing space on Kordia/JDAâs muxes, so would be a quick saving (in theory, not sure what theyâre paying to carry those?)
Was the deal with Universal to run Bravo a ten year one? If so, that would expire, I imagine, 30 June next year. If they donât renew, it could be a ripe time to realign channels &c.
TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, SKY 3, SKY 4 (open), SKY 5.
Reorganise their genres and reorganise eden and rush. They seem too similar to me. In fact they all do
I wouldnât be surprised if thereâs a Sky-based rebrand within a year or so.
Part of me wants Sky Television to rename the holding company to Three Sky, so that the FTA channel can be branded Three Sky Three. /s
They renewed the deal in December: https://images.fullscreen.nz/corporate/2024-12/Media_Release_Bravo.pdf
New Zealand has a Free-to-air Television Duopoly again with Government Owned TVNZ and the Privately Owned Sky after adding Three to itâs Roster of Channels.
@sj2450 A poll conducted by Stuff, the producers of ThreeNews, found that 43% of respondents support the new agreement between Sky and Three while 57% do not. Regardless of the poll outcome, I extend my best regards to the management and staff at Sky as they prepare to take over Three and its sister channels (Bravo, eden, Rush and HGTV), as well as ThreeNow, with effect from next week (1 August).
