New Zealand TV

F1 rights on Spark will end on 31st December 2022 according to their FB post. So probs back to Sky.

With the majority of Spark Sport content transferred to TVNZ from early next year (1 July 2023), will TVNZ bring back the weekend sports shows (for broadcast on TVNZ 1 on Saturday and Sunday afternoons)? In the past we had Sport on One and Sunday Grandstand from the 1980s.

And will there be a Monday night ‘primetime sports show’ on TVNZ DUKE? In the old days we had Mobil Sport on TV3 (now Three).

Wouldn’t have thought so

Spark set up its own sports streaming service to challenge the monopoly that is Sky. It had a good run but it was too short.

I read somewhere today F1 is going to SKy until 2023. Might have been Screenscribe.

Ditching their sports offer reminds me of their first foray into TV, FirstMedia, back in the 90’s… did anyone here try that back then (if you were old enough, that is)?

Nice to see the cricket FTA… although I wonder how long before TVNZ starts trialling a paywall service for TVNZ+

That was quick - were the rights expiring in 2023 or has Sky known for some time Spark wanted out?

ASX: Sky New Zealand is the home of Formula 1 from 2023

In addition, Sky will deliver the much-anticipated Melbourne Grand Prix free-to-air to all New Zealanders, along with highlights of each F1 race free-to-air.

When Sky says free-to-air, that means Prime?

If anything, I could imagine they’d be using Duke for a lot of the longer-form sport, similar to how Seven uses 7mate here, because I can’t imagine how much putting something like that on One or 2 would help overall TVNZ audiences… of course Blackcaps games in particular might challenge that but otherwise, it seems a natural spot for a lot of it.

It appears from Spark’s announcement they’re willing to carry the cost of the remaining rights contracts for stuff that transfers to TVNZ - that’s unusual

Think it’s a write off. They want it off the books asap. TVNZ wouldn’t have the pockets to fulfil or take over Spark’s fee

I’m assuming Spark are getting a cut of the TVNZ ad revenue on the cricket.

That or they couldn’t come to an agreement with Sky.

Could also mean TVNZ or Three - have partnered with both recently.

Think you’ll probably see tests on Duke and T20s on 1, maybe ODIs across both depending on day of week and if it’s a day nighter or not.

I would think so, but F1 would be a nice addition to +HR=E’s Sunday Motorsports programme.

Would be six days old then by that stage.

I think so, If the race has televised on Saturday in SKY then delayed coverage would be a perfect fit for CRC Motorsport on Three if SKY TV willing to work with WB Discovery for free to air coverage.

There’s no F1 races on Saturdays is my point Sheldon. It’s only qualifying and sprints.

That doesn’t stop them screening other series’ that are at least six days old. I would argue more people would see it there than late at night on Prime.

Formula 1 retains a much higher profile (especially thanks to Drive to Survive) than all of the other series they show which are mostly very niche or comparatively niche.

I don’t think it’d be worth Three’s while to purchase the rights and then wait six days to air highlights of an old race in the afternoon. They have Supercars rights but I am suspecting they wouldn’t pay a lot for them either.

Three should just leave them, unless they can get the highlights up within 12 hours (at least to their streaming service).
