New Zealand Radio

In this scenario, why would 1233AM be preferred over 891AM in Wellington? Is 1233 a higher-powered signal?

Yes. 1233AM is a high powered signal in the Wellington area, as does 891AM. This is just a small opinion and, in real life, MediaWorks has no plans to close the 891AM service.

Magic has been broadcasting to the capital on 891AM since launch (in April 2015) and before then, there was Radio Windy and, later, The Breeze. Nowadays, The Breeze broadcasts on FM - 94.1FM (Wellington city) and 98.5FM (Hutt Valley and parts of the city sheltered from the 94.1FM signal).

wat?

Is it common in NZ for frequencies to change a lot? Surely they would just leave everything as-is and not disrupt peopleā€™s listening habits?

George FM is already in 107.4 FM in Tauranga and covers the Tauranga and most of the Mount quite well

I highly Doubt that the Edge will return to 99.8 as from what I am told the reason the Edge moved down to 88.6 is due to a lot of younger people owning imported cars where the radio doesnā€™t go above 90mhzā€¦ it made more sense to put Magic on 99.8 up closer to Magic Tall on 100.6 so they are side by side and The Edge is down where more people can hear it

If anything they might move George onto 99.8

Just my view, guess if they can Magic Talk we will just have to wait and see :slightly_smiling_face:

@gordo92 Thanks for all your feedback.

@foxyrover Tony Amos has worked in the broadcasting business for nearly 50 years. His career began with Radio 1XX in Whakatane way back in 1972 and many years later, he went on to work for other radio brands.

In recent years, I describe Tony as ā€˜The Godfather of Talkbackā€™ and fans of RadioLIVE and, more recently, Magic Talk loved listening to Tony as host of overnight talkback. He has entertained listeners and taken calls from his fans. Just recently, MediaWorks announced that Magic Talkā€™s overnight talk show was replaced with replays of the previous dayā€™s programming and the Magic Music programme.

As a result of this, when it comes to overnight programming, people have chosen to ditch Magic Talk in favour of Newstalk ZB, RNZ National and other radio brands (especially worldwide through live streaming, such as 2GB in Sydney, 3AW in Melbourne and LBC in London).

Dom Harveyā€™s surprise exit from The Edge radio station after 20 years on air

Not a surprise lol. The Edgeā€™s ratings have been on a steady decline and he was the weakest link. A bit sad, after 21 years.

Iā€™m thinking like his former co-host Mike Puru, Dom would be a better fit for The Hits nowadays.

I know what you mean, that they need someone younger but if youā€™ve heard the show when heā€™s been away youā€™d realise heā€™s definitely not the weakest link lol

At least they have 6 months to find someone though after the mess theyā€™ve made of the drive show weā€™ll have to wait and see whether itā€™s actually an improvementā€¦

Back in those days, RNZā€™s old commercial stations (such as Radio BOP in Tauranga, Radio Forestland in Tokoroa and King Country Radio in Taumarunui) used to broadcast select radio programming in te reo Māori, as did Radio 1XX in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Dom finishes up on Friday so they will need to get someone settled in before Meg goes on maternity leave at the end of the year.

I do think the station as a whole is a bit of a mess. There is not one show on The Edge that I would favour over one at ZM, or even More FM at the moment. The entire breakfast show could do with a refresh, but then I wouldnā€™t know who to replace them with

Yeah The Edge breakfast has been awful for some time.

Maiā€™s breakfast show is superb too, along with ZM as well.

Iā€™m not sure where they will go with breakfast. Maybe someone like a Tom Sainsbury or Laura Daniel. The whole station needs a bit of an overhaul. It used to dominate the 16-34 age bracket, now it feels like itā€™s playing catch up (like ZM was about 10 years ago)
