ok…

Im quite intrigued to find out who it will be. Miles Davis possibly?

1 or 2 hosts? At a guess I’d say Michael Laws and Leah Panapa but doubt Laws would be any less controversial than Plunket…

Very clever work.

Never listened to Danny Watson to be honest, so not sure how he operates as a talkback host. No doubt not as controversial as Sean Plunket.

Way lighter than Plunket. But good at his craft.

Danny Watson & Leah Panapa shows will launch on Monday 12-4pm
with Graeme Hill will also join the new lineup, hosting the night show from 7-10pm

Like Graeme Hill. Not sure Danny and Leah together are a compelling combination, but intrigued to hear them.

Yeah best news is Graeme Hill on nights. I never tuned in when he was on Live but heard him filling in over summer and he’s very good.

Same, but at least it’s not just Leah. She’s better with someone to bounce off, just hope it won’t be as light and fluffy as Si & Phil…

Si? Like ā€œSi and Gary on More FMā€ Si? Is he on Magic Talk now?

Edit: Woops, never mind. Si’s on Newstalk ZB.

Yep the same Si…
with Phil Gifford on Newstalk ZB Afternoons 12-4pm

@nztv is right, @LiamP. Si’s on Newstalk ZB, not Magic Talk.

Daytime talkback is always a tricky one for both brands - talk radio doesn’t make for overly compelling workday listening in office environments compared to music, so it has to be a bit lighter.

Here’s a recap. MediaWorks announced that Danny Watson will be returning to the airwaves and joining Leah Panapa as co-host of Magic Talk’s new look afternoon slot (12-4pm) with effect from next week (1 March). They will replace Sean Plunket, who left MediaWorks earlier this month.

@OnAir We all know Danny, who had hosted afternoon talkback on Newstalk ZB for 15 years. He left the radio business at the end of 2015 to spend more time with his family.

ā€œI can’t wait to get back into radio, re-engage with listeners and work alongside Leah.ā€ - Danny Watson

In my book, before joining Newstalk ZB, Danny has had a distinguished career in television (i.e. Spot On, What Now, Telethons, Danny’s Cafe, Candid Camera etc) and radio (i.e. 91FM in Auckland - aka ā€˜Rock of the Nineties’).

When Leah moves to afternoons, Graeme Hill (from his ever popular Weekend Variety Wireless during the RadioLIVE era) will take over as host of Magic Nights. His new role as host of Magic Talk’s night slot (7-10pm) will commence in two weeks (8 March).

ā€œIt’s fantastic to have Graeme Hill join Magic Talk. Graeme is well known for his unique style and view of the world which I know listeners will enjoy.ā€ - Leon Wratt, MediaWorks Director of Content - Radio

At a glance

  • Magic Afternoons with Danny Watson and Leah Panapa - Mon-Fri, 12-4pm (commencing Monday 1 March)
  • Magic Nights with Graeme Hill - Mon-Fri, 7-10pm (commencing Monday 8 March)

Where does Danny sit politically @OnAir ? I assumed coming from ZB he’d lean to the right but according to some on Facebook he’s ā€˜just another woke leftie’

Hahaha of course the Facebook commenters have ripped in. Anyone to the left of the ACT party seems to be called a woke leftie by people on social media.

To your question - I would guess slightly right but perhaps centre? Certainly not hard one side or other.

I’m guessing Magic Talk might get a refreshed sound on Monday, with the launch of the new afternoon show.

quite like leah remember her from the days of the rock and the sound brekky shows i always have memories of danny watson being on tv growing up then doing radio with kim adamson
on 91fm
talk radio in the afternoons is a struggle so i imagine this may be a refreshing show should compete well with si and phil on zb at the same time
