Newstalk ZB Northland on 1026AM was dead air for most of the day.

john banks should be made to issue an apology to nz cricket as well what was mediaworks thinking
in giving John banks any airspace at all given his past form

love the a-z

This is not too surprising - he loves the attention too much to just shut up when Banks was under fire. And there is the iwi checkpoint interview which the BSA upheld.

It’s a shame cause like Banks on a good day he does very interesting talkback

If Plunket is let go you’d have to think Peter Williams’ days are numbered…

I just don’t know where Magic would go from here. They’ve tried to outflank ZB on the right and it’s got them in shit. Live didn’t work either.

Now they’ve lost their newsroom as well (sort of). Time to wave the white flag?

Yeah me either. They already have the cricket… Magic Sport 24/7? But unlikely I know

Maybe they’ll bring in some left leaning hosts to add some balance as ZB has done…

Does that mean Newstalk ZB will be the only commercial news talk network in New Zealand? And what about bringing back the Independent Radio News (IRN) brand which would be based in the Newstalk ZB/NZME newsroom?

Back in the old days, IRN was a news service that played on most independently owned and operated radio stations in New Zealand. The majority of New Zealand radio stations not owned by Radio New Zealand (RNZ) used this news and sport service usually followed by the station’s own local news and weather forecast.

In 1996 RNZ sold its commercial operation and The Radio Network (TRN) was formed, at the time TRN purchased IRN. TRN branded the news service on its own stations as Radio Network News while the news service continued to be called IRN on stations not owned by TRN despite the news coming from the same place. RNZ continued to operate its own news service on RNZ National and RNZ Concert, the two non-commercial stations that were not sold.

By 2000 a large number of independent radio stations had been taken over by RadioWorks, which did not want to pay for a news service operated by its main competitor and chose to start their own news service.

Possible. If the rumour mill is right though, they got cricket rights for free though (under a revenue sharing arrangement) but I can’t imagine too many sports rights organisations would be keen on that arrangement.

Possibly - then we are back to RadioLIVE territory though.

No chance, Paddy.

@OnAir Oh. MediaWorks needs to have a dedicated radio newsroom.

I wonder if a rolling news station could work in New Zealand? Here in the UK, LBC London News was rebranded and relaunched as LBC News in October 2019. Since it’s relaunch, the station seems to have done quite well.

Ahh ok that makes more sense why NZC were so quick to threaten to remove the rights.

Exactly… dull as dishwater. Maybe you’re right re Time to wave the white flag…

Magic Talk host Sean Plunket has decided to leave MediaWorks.

MediaWorks CEO Cam Wallace says: “Sean has hosted Magic Talk afternoons over the past two years
and I would like to thank him for his significant contribution to the station.
“During his time with Magic Talk, Sean has engaged his audience with many vibrant discussions and I
wish him all the best for his future endeavours.”

An update on the afternoon show on Magic Talk will be made in due course.

Can’t be long now before Peter Williams “decides” to leave…

Who will replace Plunket…? Miles Davis would probably be quite good if they’re looking for someone more middle of the road.
Mark Richardson?
Tim Wilson?
Garner?
