New Zealand Radio

Likely will be used to upgrade and add new features to existing studios or be put into storage for when gear breaks down and needs replacing.

It’s only gear from 2016 and it’s the gear they put into the upgraded studios around the country till the Hargreaves gear and design which I would assume will be the gear they buy for new studio spaces going forward.

@theGradyConnell Can I ask - with Magic Talk moving to MediaWorks’ brand new headquarters at Hargreaves Street in Auckland’s St Mary’s Bay, where will the radio news and sports bulletins (through Newshub) broadcast from?

The newsreader is at Hargreaves St and the reporting team is at Flower Street.

@theGradyConnell Thanks for letting me know, Grady.

Magic Talk uploaded a video with Peter Williams showing off the new studios.

Also saw Peter’s executive producer posted photos of the studio and control room.

Surely the plan long term is to have The AM Show from there. Cut out a lot of the tv costs yet somehow it would still look like a bit of an upgrade compared to he current studio.

The Repco Beach Hop with Magic commenced yesterday (25 November) and will run for four days, finishing on 29 November. Earlier this year, the festival had been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It’s time to return to the Coromandel beach resort town of Whangamata, which will come to life to the sound of Rock and Roll music and V8 Engines!

The festival hosts a wide range of events for all interests and tastes including the Grand Parade, Classic Car Show, Main Street Car Show, Auto Trade Swap Meet, a Retro Caravan Show, drive-in movies, a Burlesque show, a beauty show, bands, music and much, much more!

And I also noticed that, to coincide with the Repco Beach Hop (and according to an advertisement), Magic would be found on 93.1FM in Whangamata. In fact, that Whangamata frequency usually belongs to The Edge and Magic already broadcasts to the Coromandel (i.e. Thames, the Seabird Coast, Paeroa and the Hauraki Plains, but not Pauanui, Tairua, Whangamata or Whitianga) on 104.4FM.

More FM’s dual programming strategy was dropped in favour of talk radio as, earlier this year, Magic Talk launched on 106.3FM (i.e. the old RadioLIVE frequency). For listeners who are unable to tune to Magic Talk on its AM frequency (1368AM) they can now ‘turn up the conversation’ on 106.3FM.

Wonder if Mediaworks plan on putting talkback back on FM in Auckland anytime soon…

This is only heresy but I’ve heard that if a frequency comes up they will try and get it to get back on FM

While Magic (or Magic Music) prides itself on playing ‘the greatest hits of all time’, The Sound is still going strong as ‘the home of classic rock’ (to me).

It’s been on air for the past eight years and it has played ‘the soundtrack of our lives’ since The Sound started, but I don’t think Magic will replace The Sound and its existing frequencies (except Rodney), and Magic Talk will be on FM in Auckland (100.6FM) and Christchurch (99.3FM) and on the old RadioLIVE frequency in Rodney (92.9FM), which is now home to The Sound since last year.

Probably a stupid question but how do they acquire new frequencies?

Through the RSM, who have regularly auction what’s left. Most FM frequencies in major metros, if not all, have already been acquired.

Back in November, Pacific Star Network Ltd had advised the Australian Stock Exchange that its subsidiary Sports Entertainment Network Pty Ltd (SEN) had entered into negotiations with TAB New Zealand to acquire Broadcast and Distribution Rights for their 29 AM/FM radio licences in New Zealand. A Heads of Agreement was signed, and the signing of formal agreements are subject to negotiation, due diligence and Board approval.

SEN intends to launch a sports and racing media network across New Zealand called SENZ.

This map shows a full list of frequencies in which SENZ is expected to broadcast on (click the image below to enlarge) once the formal agreements are approved and signed. Up until very recently, those frequencies - currently owned by TAB New Zealand - were once the home of Radio Pacific-Trackside, BSport, LiveSPORT and TAB Trackside Radio respectively. Trackside Radio was suspended in April this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

If I had to guess, I’d say 2021 Hauraki Drive, Thane Kirby & Kara Rickard

It doesn’t sound like she’s being replaced

And don’t worry - in 2021, General Lee and Tammy will keep the bangers and bants cranking on George Breakfast!

Possibly.

The fact that it doesn’t mention that the TV and broadcasting opportunities isn’t with Mediaworks/Three suggests its with NZME/TVNZ.

I know that you dont have to like the music on the station you work at, but how much of a rock fan is Kara? It seems out of place

Survey 4 2020 released today -

Not a lot of change… From what I can tell:
Better result for Coast across the board

Marcus Lush overtaken Hosking as #1 ZB show (last survey they were equal on 18.8).
Hosking 17.0 - Lush 19.7

ZM still beating The Edge in Breakfast and Drive:
ZM Breakfast 7.0 (last 6.8)
The Edge Breakfast 6.0 (last 5.4)

ZM Drive 7.2 (last 7.0)
The Edge Drive 6.6 (last 6.9)

I think she does some reporting for SKY but she co-hosts R&R on Three as well… guess TV work isn’t going to be mentioned given Three is separated from MW now.

Looks like a big percentage increase for More FM Wellington breakfast, since taking a networked breakfast show, albeit off a low base.
