New Zealand Radio

Hearing that Mediaworks Radio is in talks with NZ Cricket. Perhaps commentary of ODIs and test matches on Magic Talk, with T20s on The Rock and super smash on Rova, along with their own version of ACC? Suspect NZC would cheapen the deal just so to have radio commentary still active.

Sounds interesting. Wonder how many Magic Talk listeners would like having cricket instead of Ryan Bridge. I know I sure would! Haha

They refused to with NZME is my understanding but maybe they didn’t think NZME would actually walk?

I don’t think NZME could make it pay for itself. Yes, cricket is great for advertising windows, but it might not be the golden goose pundits think it is. If NZME couldn’t make it pay, what makes MediaWorks think any different?

Unless they’ve advertisers for summer-related jobs… Test Matches brought to you by Valspar, paint your house to the cricket!

That said, the best commentators come from cricket radio commentary, for use of descriptive play, padding and puns, you can’t go past them. It would be a real shame to lose it.

Maybe a 50/50 joint venture between MW and Sky to form Sky Sport Radio.

I’d suggest Sky would be more likely to partner NZME given a few things you’ll begin to see soon.

Sky already has a partnership with MediaWorks which produces Prime News but Sky Sport Radio, to me, is like a joint venture between both Sky and MediaWorks Radio.

I mean, MediaWorks will soon be going toe-to-toe with NZME when Sky Sport Radio launches.

is that similiar to the station in sydney that has laurie daley and michael clarke

@rodvanalphen Absolutely no. Sky Sport Radio, here in New Zealand, has no relation to Sky Sports Radio which is based in Sydney.

It doesn’t exist, for one.

Radio Sport’s commentary and cricket coverage (news, interviews etc) is sponsored by Resene, as well as Sky Sport funnily enough!

It is sad there isn’t a clear future for cricket on the radio in NZ. At least in Australia the ABC should have international cricket no matter what happens in forseeable future, unless domestic T20 takesover completely and no more international cricket. It may seem far fetched to think like that, but it nearly happening to One Day cricket this Australian summer. In fact it did as match are in Autumn. :grinning:Who would of guessed the 30 years ago when 50 over one day cricket had unstoppable popularity.

Great win to NZ today.

There was a pretty big suggestion the ABC had been shut out last time around but they were included at the last minute from memory.

Yeah I remember that too, although there would of been outcry if it did in fact happen.

In NZ, I thought “radio sport” was similar to the ABC. I’d probably need to do more research on the history of cricket on the radio in NZ.

Cricket used to be on the YC - Radio New Zealand’s second non-commercial AM network.

Typically they’d play classical music (basically the forerunner to RNZ Concert) and over summer would broadcast the cricket to the commercial stations could keep making money (rather than play the long-form game, remember, this was before ODI’s). Some used to joke that the C in 1YC, 2YC, 3YC, 4YC stood for Cricket.

I’m not sure when it moved to Radio Sport, but i suppose it came about when the govt. sold off the commercial arm of RNZ in the 1990’s… which is effect, is Radio Sport and it’s historic NZME stablemates (ZB, ZM and the community stations with funny callsigns).

Jono and Ben are replacing the Christchurch-based Brodie & Fitzy Breakfast Show in the Canterbury region.

Despite reports to the contrary, The Hits’ Hawke’s Bay Breakfast hosts, Adam and Megan, along with Dunedin’s Callum and P, and Queenstown’s Ferg, will continue in their roles. The rest of The Hits local day shows across the country will also remain unchanged.

Happy to see that NZME are keeping all but one show at least.

Its a shame to lose a local breakfast and I quite liked Brodie and Fitzy (I prefer them to the overcrowded breakfast club!) but unfortunately they suffered with that fact that Christchurch does not tune into 97.7FM. As long as I have followed ratings (mid 2000’s) Classic Hits and then The Hits struggled and is often one of the lowest rating commercial stations in the city. More FM reigns supreme, Ironically on weekdays at the moment The Hits is more local than More FM.

Callum and P addressed this fake news article this morning as listeners let them know how gutted they were. Both hosts had nothing nice to say toward stuff or the reporter and u don’t blame them.
