NZME has today announced that Jono and Ben will be the new breakfast hosts for The Hits.

See more here:

Well shit… Poor Jono! Leaves The Edge for The Rock, ends up at The Hits… And bit of a downgrade for Toni & Sam

Quite a big backtrack from the original announcement. Why on earth would you put them on The Hits when they would likely attract a similar audience to Fletch, Vaughn and Megan. If anything they should have pulled the plug on Matt Heath and Jeremy Wells. Toni and Sam also seem a bit to young to be on Coast.

With the new 3pm Show on The Hits will Mike, Stace and Anika be live from 4-7pm or will 6-7pm continue to be prerecorded?

They are odd decisions. Jono & Ben were very popular on The Rock, I could see the thinking behind putting them on Hauraki.

And yeah Toni & Sam do seem too young for that station.
I would have thought moving Stacey & Mike to Coast would have been a better fit, leaving Anika on The Hits with either J&B or Toni & Sam… That would have made more sense imo.

How horrible, best to have them off the radio full stop or yea at the rock which I never listen to or hauraki which I can’t receive. So glad The hits down south have Callum and P. Can only get the hits in the place I work so would rather Callum and P any day over Jono and Ben.

I have to say I am really liking Stace, Mike and Anika at the moment, I flick between them and Bree and Clint.

If Jono and Ben are only taking over the markets that Laura, Sam & Toni broadcast in that only leaves The West Coast, Nelson and Marlborugh that will get them in the South Island

From my point of view, if Jono and Ben’s new breakfast show goes national on The Hits, some of its local breakfast hosts may migrate to More FM (replacing The Breakfast Club direct from Christchurch).

“Stuff understands local hosts on The Hits, such as Canterbury’s Brodie Kane and Dave “Fitzy” Fitzgerald, could be pushed out of primetime when Pryor and Boyce arrive in April”

Hmmm not sure Mediaworks would be in a hurry to replace the very popular Breakfast Club.

From the Herald article “An announcement will be made soon on the new Radio Hauraki Drive Show” - I’m guessing Thane Kirby might be one of the hosts…

Sadly Im not surprised. It would be a real shame for Dunedin especially to lose Callum & P who are pretty popular and I can’t see their current audience sticking around for Jono and Ben. Would be a big gain for Damien Newell on The Breeze though although maybe Callum and P could move to Mediaworks.

Unlikely as Mediaworks already offer a local breakfast show in those markets already and some of them have been moved off More FM and onto The Breeze for The Breakfast Club.

Seriously Callum & p would be a great fit for Dunedin’s breeze as much as Damien is a legend on dunedin radio since 1997 his show lacks the chemistry that Callum & p have
Or have Callum & p on 97.4 more dunedin & 100.6 More freq have the Chch breakfast club

Toni, Sam & Jase on Coast from April this seems to be a positive move for Coast a stronger breakfast show
I’m thinking Coast will be playing less 70’s more 00’s from April
A softer mix ,
But coast needs a total branding overhaul & with a full breakfast lineup it’s a start but is it soft rock, easy, Smooth I’m confused
Shortening the news bulletins would be great also
Jono & Ben on The Hits I personally think they are better on A rock station but hey could be proven wrong

wow nzme making some big changes personally may or may impact us as we dont get coast here in chch (maybe coast will be rolled out here at the same time to reflect the new lineup)
i didnt think the hits would suit jono and ben as i still associate them with something like the rock

So is Coast set to challenge The Breeze head on?

Coast is on air in Christchurch and has been for some time its just that it is available on AM. There is an additional FM frequency for it but it broadcasts from Southshore so is limited to eastern parts of the city only.

Definitely seems like it and the playlist and the on air lineup has been gradually leaning that way recently as well.

I really don’t want Jono and Ben taking Callum and P’s spot on breakfast because I will have nothing to listen to while working :joy: Callum is awesome imo

not that i listen to the Hits in chch but it would be a shame if the local announcers lost their jobs, the breeeze in canterbury have a local show (dave/hillary??) and seem to relate to the local audience
and seems to a point of difference here, not sure the audience size of the hits
but imagine they try to do the same

another option would have been to put more announcers on mix
insteead of just 1 during the day ie tracy donaldson
maybe have a breakfast and drive show

NZME has announced it will not renew its commentary rights for domestic and international cricket played in New Zealand, when the current contract expires at the end of next month.

This affects Radio Sport, but also the Alternative Commentary Collective.

so sky sport loses the tv rights and now nzme walks away from the radio rights which would have been an option where does it leave people who have no access to the internet or any other ways of following the game

Seems unlikely any other radio network would pick them up eh?
