NZME have started running ads this week for iHeart Country on their other stations. Heard them on ZM and Hauraki promoting the 91.7fm frequency in Christchurch.
If they boosted the freq people would probably listen on FM. Dunno how any of that work but more power would be good for them and Flava too
We heard it on coast the other day
RSM wouldn’t allow them too. Flava / iHeart can’t transmit at a high power because there isn’t enough spectrum in these regions to enable this.
Why [expand]
2 reasons I can think of:
- stations cannot be spaced close together due to bandwidth needed for FM - the closest you could get would be 0.2MHz of each other and I don’t think that’s recommended.
- The four colour theorem here - basically you can use at most 4 colours to colour subregions in a map without adjacent regions sharing the same colours. This also applies to frequencies.
Both of these constraints are the reason stations are normally spaced 0.8MHz apart in a region, with an offset so adjacent regions have at least a 0.2MHz difference.
Some of the bigger regions (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch) are able to get away with having 0.4MHz spacing is because they’re assigned multiple bands that happen to overlap, though their purpose was to be used as an infill station rebroadcasting the same program of station already operating rather than a new station. These licenses don’t specify this though, so it’s up to the companies that own those frequencies - which is why say flava doesn’t transmit from the same transmitter as say ZM and with a fraction of the power.
The only exception I can think of is The Sound in Auckland, which shares the same frequency as Waikato’s The Sound however that’s due to both transmitters being synchronized. Not too sure if you can notice the FM capture effect as you drive between the regions or not?
(Not 100% sure if there’s other reasons why this is the case, or if I’m completely wrong but this is my understanding)
Casey Sullivan has finished up as content director of The Edge this week. Looks like Adrian Brine is taking over that role.
Sad to hear about sports journalist gary ahern who passed away at 75
I asked this here before but no one really seemed to know - what ended up happening with The Radio Vault?
I was going through some old tapes of radio I had the other night and remembered I’d sent some to the previous guy (Duane?) until he went all weird and stopped talking to me because I disagreed with him on something.
Then a new guy named Dan took over so I rejoined the group and they started posting audio again.
Then they started asking for donations. While some people did donate, the donation request rubbed some people up the wrong way as they had contributed audio and/or their own time to the site.
Then it just disappeared with no notice, no warning, no nothing, and I understand any e-mails sent to the address just bounce back now.
What happened to it? Where did Dan go, and (more importantly) what happened to everyone’s donations, which I’m sure were made in good faith towards the upkeep of the site? Did anyone who made a donation get a notice they were shutting down?
Not sure if you were posting here then - but they had a meltdown here too and then deleted all their posts. Around when they closed the donation site.
Huge shame too - still dearly miss that 2XS Millennium aircheck they had on there
I may not have been - was this when Duane had his meltdown (I searched back and found that one), but that was some time ago? I was meaning the new ownership under that guy Dan Magill(?); unless I missed it I never saw him post anything here?
Thanks for the clarification. I was concerned about the monetary donations and what had happened to those under Dan’s running of the show, where did they go to, I wonder?
Ahh now I’m not sure - I think I may have the two guys mixed up
I thought it was the latter, but now I’m not all that sure either. Had some interaction on here, always cordially, so was surprised by the sudden departure.
This was the post I was referring to from Duane when he was still on here, from May 2022 ![]()
I went back through my e-mails and found that Dan took over the page in January 2023 as far as I can see - but then a post in here about a year later from Paddy saying it had been shut down and the “buy me a coffee” page was returning a 404 error:
Just went to the Buy Me a Coffee platform a moment ago and I noticed that The Radio Vault closed its doors and the 404 page was shown.
As far as I am concerned the team from The Radio Vault have done a terrific job in recent years.
That’s what I was asking about - did anyone who made a donation to them find out what happened? Where did all the donations go? Okay, I never donated (apart from audio) but I know that if I had made a monetary contribution I’d be pretty unhappy to see the page I gave money to just disappear with no warning - not to mention all the archived audio disappearing too.
Lovely to hear Tracy Donaldson on the sound fm this morning
In fact @PaddyTePou you indicate above you donated to the last incarnation of The Radio Vault - did you ever receive any notification/warning/anything that the guy was about to shut it down ? If so, I’d be interested to know how he explained why it was happening.
Duane (from memory) would usually just say it was “too stressful” running the site and then the next day it would be closed.
Did you ever receive any notification/warning/anything that the guy was about to shut it down?
@my_names_mr_burns No, I didn’t.
No, I didn’t.
That’s even worse then. I would have thought that you would be first in line since you contributed! Very disappointing on their part ![]()
On another note I tuned in to The Sound breakfast show this morning (for the first time in a long time) and heard Robert Taylor, very good. Georgia? Didn’t she used to be at NZME? And I thought Martin Devlin was set (for life?) over on The Platform? What happened there?
Lovely to hear Tracy Donaldson on the sound fm this morning
Great to hear she has another job, now back there doing the drive show.
I wonder if this will mean a change to the voiceovers for Coast’s imaging. Robert Taylor got swapped out quick at Gold after he started at The Sound.
I would imagine so
