New Zealand Radio

RNZ absolutely bleeding listeners - the station needs a major revamp.
Morning Report is unlistenable.

Query, how would you fix it if you were running the show at National Radio?
I must admit I listen to Morning Report sometimes in the morning (usually for the news and weather) but it’s not exactly what I’d call appointment listening, however it’s okay. Having said that, I guess it depends on what’s happened in the world overnight as to what drives their show?

To me, it’s just so dull. Especially since Susie Ferguson left.
The show needs a revamp. I get it’s public radio and they can’t take a political slant but it all just feels a little staid and the hosts are too ‘nice’ and don’t have the energy needed for that time of the morning.

She probably wouldn’t want to get back into media but Ali Mau would be a good host - engaging, great interviewer, well- rounded. Or an Anna Burns-Francis or Bernadine Oliver-Kerby (health permitting) or someone, paired with an Eric Young. People with a bit of personality that immediately add spice to the show. I’m sure there are others on staff who would be better (I like Emile Donovan at night and Charlotte Cook at lunch).

That’s Morning Report, but I also find the news writing style and presentation of the station about 30 years dated, I’m not saying use slang or drop standards but it feels like it’s from a bygone era - it’s not engaging, or pacy. It feels like an old cardigan - comfy but you probably wouldn’t wear it in public.

There are probably reasons why they don’t but I remember when ZB ditched their old station voice and refreshed their imaging about 15 years ago. It was a drastic change but it made the station sound about 20 years younger overnight. RNZ needs to take that step.

Get Jack Tame to replace Corin on Morning report as a starter imo. I do like Ingrid but maybe Lisa Owen & Tame for Breakfast (Ingrid on Checkpoint perhaps).

Needs hard ass interviewers again. Given it looks like Tame is no longer the next in line on ZB once The Hosk retires , RNZ should just go for it now.

Used to listen to RNZ a lot 15-20 years ago, now Jim Mora on Sunday morning is about all I tune in for. In fact, it’s ever since they started tryinig to get more people my age listening!

But the first thing I’d do on Morning Report, is get rid of that dready tune they play before the news.

John Campbell was certainly a breath of fresh air when he did a stint there

Not very often my worlds intersect like this, but it was fun getting to do a 7,000 mi zoom interview and go behind the launch of IHC NZ

According to an interview with Woman’s Day or the NZ Woman’s Weekly, it is intended that Anna Burns-Francis may be leaving New Zealand for Dubai (though I am not 100% sure).

First episode of the new Media Insider podcast by Shayne Currie - also available to watch on the Herald.

The challenge for RNZ to grow live radio audience + there is appetite in the government to sell TVNZ.

How about Patrick Gower? I think it was him filling in on Morning Report this morning. I think he’s a fairly talented journalist, but I must say I found his presentation a bit stilted, I thought.

Yeah , I think he gets found a hit when he has to work on the fly. I like him too but as-lobbing doesn’t appear a strength - however he could become more comfortable over time

My mind boggles. You’re one s away from a messy situation there!

But yeah, ad-libbing, as you meant, Paddy’s needs a bit more practice.

Paul Flynn, or Flynny as he’s also known, has been in the radio game for 25 years and will be taking a break due to his future commitments. It is intended that Flynny’s replacement will be confirmed by MediaWorks, which owns and operates More FM, as soon as possible, though I am not sure.

Might be Jayden King, now hes back in NZ. Thats my bet

Heard he has a few health battles hope he gets lots of support and focus on his care

Flava/Tauranga Question:

I know Flava was on 99.0 in Tauranga from 2013 to 2018, but I’ve been unable to determine what frequency in the area it was on before (it registered in the ratings from 2007 to 2010.)
