New Zealand Radio

A lot of the staff have but some have also taken the change to move elsewhere in the industry

Do we know the name?

At the moment it’s Magic News at least on Magic. But I think once today launches it would be Today News?

Post from Mark Leishman on Magic Music Facebook page

An emotional day saying farewell to my ol’ mate Geoff Bryan who has left the Magic Breakfast to take on a new role as News Editor and Presenter of night time news on Today FM. I can only imagine how hard it was for Geoff to give up those early morning alarms … and the joy of sharing every morning with me! … But understandable as when you finish your News Editor role at midnight and start with Magic Music at 5 AM it is not considered good for your health … Geoff, ever the worker, did consider giving it a go! A breakfast show is a bit like a marriage and as Sedaka would say “Breaking Up is Hard To Do” So I am really going to miss our daily breakfast meetings. Geoff’s humour, devotion to his family, grandchildren, cricket and football is to be applauded. He has the knowledge and ability to always have something pertinent to say on any subject regardless of how little time I gave him to think. You think his news reading voice is smooth … you should hear him sing. We were born one month apart (He is much older !!), have known each other for 40 years for God’s sake … and have spent the last six years doing these crazy hours on Magic… So as you can imagine it is quite an adjustment to have to make and a good time for a Christmas break. So Geoff as we head down different forks in the road I wish you well and know you will provide considerable class to the new Today FM. Now after 30 years of early morning alarms … you have permission to smash the bloody alarm clock and have your mornings back.

@OnAir @theGradyConnell Despite the fact Geoff Bryan had left Magic Breakfast (with Mark Leishman) recently to take up a new role at Today FM, a promotional image of Mark and Geoff is still shown on Magic’s website.

Interesting to see that ZM has taken over some of the GOLD frequencies in the Coromandel. Note this a different GOLD station from the one inside the NZME stable.

Seems that NZME has bought out Gold FM, the livestream on their website is now streaming ZM as well.

Gold FM’s frequencies are now all licensed to NZME in the Register Of Radio Frequencies. So that’s another local community radio station down the tube. What a shame.

MediaWorks has announced its new talk station Today FM will launch in Auckland on 90.2 FM.
It will see The Rock move from 90.2 FM to 106.2 FM in Tāmaki Makaurau. The Rock will move to 106.2 FM from 1 January 2022. It will be simulcast on both frequencies until the launch of Today FM.
The Rock is launching a campaign across radio, digital and out-of-home to let listeners know about the
frequency move in Auckland. This will include a competition giving away $106.20 on air every hour from the end of January.
The Rock Content Director Brad King says, “We’ll move anywhere we can make more noise! 106.2 FM is neighbour free so we can crank everything up louder - and we all know rock is designed to be played at full noise!”
In addition to Auckland, Today FM will broadcast on FM frequencies throughout the country, including
the new frequency of 95.3 FM in Canterbury. MediaWorks Director of News & Talk Dallas Gurney says it’s exciting to launch Today FM on FM frequencies throughout Aotearoa, including 90.2 FM in Auckland and on a new FM frequency in Canterbury.
